May be my Last
Well guys I am off to take Gramps hunting. We went out yesterday and saw 9 tom's.
Gramps has been my No 1 partner since I was 12, being he is not doing well I feel this may be our last. 60 degrees outside, and I hope anything walks up. I told gramps he has the green light. One more would be nice!! |
RE: May be my Last

I wish I had the oppurtunity to hunt with either one of my grandfathers. Your'e lucky. |

RE: May be my Last
Good luck!! My grandpa is responsible for turning me on to hunting and the great outdoors. He is 84 and I dread the day when he can't go in the woods with me or we lose him.

RE: May be my Last
Good luck to you both and relish the time you share with him.

RE: May be my Last
You know I hope the time is well spent and even if he is unable to continue to hunt with you for whatever reason he will always be there with you in the woods. When my dad had to stop hunting I would always share the hunts with him from the alarm going off until fixing the dinner. We would share memories of our old hunts and whatever else he wanted to talk about. He passed away in aug of 2001 and I had not gotten to hunt very much due to injuries from an accidentand mostly because of work. But this year I have gotten to hunt more then I have in a long time. I chose to use my dads remington 244 on the first day of gun season and was blessed to harvest a nice 7 point early in the day. After the moment of the shot and seeing him go down I had this feeling that he was right there with me as he often was when I was growing up. So this deer had more meaning to me then just putting meat on the table.

RE: May be my Last
Wonderful sentiment Germ. Thank you.
I never really knew my Grandpa's. Both were gone before I was born, and a step grandpa died when I was very young. I only have one memory of him, from when I was about 5 years old. I lost my dad when I was about 30. I too understand the dream of one more. Many times I find myself wishing for the chance to go hunting with my dad. But I know he is with me in my heart, every time I go out, and I can feel his presence with me in my stand, and I have to smile, cause he is in a better place where every buck walking by is a trophy, and every shot is perfect. Where as, I am still stuck down here, watching spikes and fork horns ( neither legal in my State ) and struggling to bring one shooter in with my " buck growl. " LOL......Then I hear him laugh......Not at me, but with me... and all is well. May we all learn to cherish the love and wisdom of the " Seniors " in our lives, and appreciate them while we still have them in our lives. God bless |

RE: May be my Last
That's awesome that you and your grandfather still get to hunt together. I am fortunate that my 70 year old grandpa still rifle hunts with us. This year he shot a five pointer, which we try to let grow on our property, but him still being able to hunt is better than letting a deer grow.

RE: May be my Last
Germ, best of luck for seasons to come. I always explain that I am a self taught bowhunter. I had no one in my family that bowhunted when I started in my early teens. However,
My grandfather use to take me for walks when he hunted grouse and other upland birds with his Weimer "Duke". He'd point the bird out to me before they flushed it. I don't have that many memories of him other than those few times but they are vivid in my brain. He was a rough man but had a soft spot for us kids. Blessed you are for having these times with him and I pray for continued success. |
RE: May be my Last
Good Luck and Go get em'!

RE: May be my Last
The biggest regret in life I have is that my grandpa didn't live long enough to see the man I've become....and to meet his great grandson.
You and I have talked enough for me to know this though, Gary.....your grandpa knows you "get it".......and you two are of the same mold. You didn't get... "skipped";). I think you'll know what I mean. I'd give a lot to share those feelings with my grandpa. I know you realize how blessed you are. Jeff |
RE: May be my Last
Thats great to hear germ.... i got too take gramps out for the opener of gun season this year also, and only 2 hours into the hunt, he shot a nice 6 point. my grandparents were also my hunting parters and teachers thru my younger years of starting hunting, many good times at there deer camp. I was looking forward this year to seeing my grandma harvest one more deer this year, but she passed away a couple months ago:(
Good luck on your hunt with gramps germ,i hope he whacks one,you just never know when it willbe yourtime to go. |
RE: May be my Last
I am hoping to get a couple more seasons with my grandpa, and today will determine that. He is going in for aortic valve replacement and double bypass, he is actually probably being operated on right now. The doctors were all very optimistic, and his health post-op should be alot better than it was pre-surgery. Good luck Germ, hope you get one!

RE: May be my Last
Well we had fun, did not see a deer, but the sunset was great:)
At one point he told me, look at that sunset. I replied with "We are hunting whitetails, not sunsets" He laughed, in my younger days I had a hard time focusing on what we were hunting!! He knew I was messy with him!! He may go out for muzzle loader, will see, he is having trouble breathing. His lungs are all scared from Asbestis(spelling ?). |
RE: May be my Last
