VA deer never heard of the growl?
My buddy came in from TN yesterday and brought me a M.A.D. Buck growl. Well, I was like a kid on Christmas morning playing with my new toy all day yesterday.:D
Today was the big "field test." I got setup this morning and made a few grunts.Moments later, squirrels were barking and I thought that a deer was possibly on the way. He never came (at least I thought he didn't.) So I decided to grunt followed by a growl or two. No sooner than I got the call back in my pocket a deer scurries up the mountain. He appeared to be a smaller buck but he decided he did not like what he heard. The buck would stop every now and then and look back. So he wasn't totally spooked out of his skin. My theories: -This smaller buck was intimidated by the "growl" and decided to get the hell out of Dodge. -He saw/smelled me since I was hunting on the ground w/ my gun. I would have taken my bow but this was my first morning hunting this new spot on this particular property. - Last but not least, the cool new trend hasn't made it to VA yet.:) I'm not giving up on it so soon though. I will test it more next week and hopefully have a better story to tell with success. |
RE: VA deer never heard of the growl?
Funny stuff right there, don't they know- all the cool deer are doing the growl!

RE: VA deer never heard of the growl?
Not only have those 1 1/2 year old Virginia deer not heard the Growl, this 62 year old hunter hasn't heard it either. I've been around deer a lot longer than they have. What does a deer know about such stuff anyway. Maybe if we gave them a TV with Drury commercial on constant loop they'd know.[8D]

My dadsaid almostexactly the same thing.
'I've been hunting for 55 years and never heard a damn buck make a noise like that'. I'm going to test it out more next week and make my final decision. |
RE: VA deer never heard of the growl?
Add Arkansas deer to the never heard that and I ain't coming to it list.
I guess I had better eduacate them that when I growl, they are supposed to come a running. Good luck and good hunting God Bless |
RE: VA deer never heard of the growl?
I'm in va also. I've got the Primos roar (I think), anyway, the day I used it, was the only day this year that I have not seen any deer at all. Maybe it was a coincedence? But, I've been hunting most of my life and haven't heard it either, but va has too many doe, so there really isn't a reason for buck to get that aggresive.

RE: VA deer never heard of the growl?
Been bowhunting for 25 years, Like Davidmil mentioned, I've seen probably a 1000 + deer in those 25 years, never once did I ever hear a buck growl. I've spent a lot of time in the trees during the rut, heard grunts, bleats, snort wheeze and more, never a "growl"....but it's great marketing. I've said it before, you'll scare more bucks than you call in. On the opposite, I've never seen a buck spook because of a grunt. I'll stick with grunts and bleats.

But I wiil give it props for making a great, albeit expensive, grunt call. It makes a great sounding grunt.

ORIGINAL: MichaelT. But I wiil give it props for making a great, albeit expensive, grunt call. It makes a great sounding grunt. If the growl doesn't work out for me, I will replace my old grunt with this one.:) |
RE: VA deer never heard of the growl?
I haven't used the growl (or ever heard a deer growl), but I ten dot agree about the deer here in VA. With no antler restrictions and two buck tags per yearI find about a9 to 1 doe to buck ratio (not counting button bucks), so the bucks aren't as aggressive towards each other as they are in many parts of the country. I think that's why I've never heard of rattling antlers working here in VA, either. So no growl for this bowhunter exceptmy growl of satisfaction at a good, clean hit with my arrow!

As far as grunts go, I don't think you can beat the true-talker.
