How far do you process? After kill

I bone out all my deer but then usually take most of the meat to the processor. I like to keep back straps, tender lions, and some roasts.

I always have, and always will, process a deer myself. It is just such a incredible feeling to take it all the way, from practicing all summer, to setting up stands, to shooting the deer, tracking it, then butchering it.
I feel like I would be selling myself short if I had someone else butcher it for me.
That said, I dont fault anyone for taking it to the processor, just make sure he is a good one.:)

I do all my own on all my game. At least this way, if I don't like how it turns out, I can't blame the processor for messing it up, and besides, it saves me a lot of money!:)

Yep, finish what you started. By the time a guy has a deer processed with all the fancy sticks/links/sausages/jerky/etc. it can add up to almost $200. Two deer at that cost and you could've bought one bad a$$ meat grinder.

RE: How far do you process? After kill

So far this year I've managed to process 2 deer myself and the only reason is because I don't know of anyone who will do it at a fair price. Sure there are people who want to charge me $40 to do it, but I'd rather spend that money on gas to gohunting in the first place. I did most of my research here on this forum to learn about processing. Basically, I just skin and quarter the deer, cut out the backstraps and then turn the meat over to my wife and she bones it out and bags it for the freezer.

My meat yields so far this year are 21 lbs. fora spike I got with my bow and 23 lbs. for a doe I got with my .30-30. The deer here in VA I've been seeing are just not that big, I guess that's why we are allowed to shoot 5 of them a year. There are just too many of them for the habitat.
