first archery buck 18.5" wide 7pt
I shot this guy at 9:15 thursday morning. I'd only seen one other deer all morning,a doe at 7:00. At 9:00 I figured I'd try the grunt tube and see what would happen. After the second calling session I looked directly behind me to the south, and about 90 yds. back I saw him coming directly at me. He chose the trail to the east and I pulled back when he went behind the tree. At 20 yds. when I felt good about the position and about where I could stop him, I made the usual doe bleet sound and he stopped. The arrow flew perfectly and I felt awesome about the hit, a perfect double lung pass through. He then spun around and ran for about 20-30 yds andthenstarted to walk. He walked another 30 yds and just stood. Right before he fell, his tail started wagging very fast because he knew something didn't feel right, and I knew he was going down. The surprising thing was, therewas very little fora blood trail, so I'm glad he went down in sight. He has an 18.5" inside spread but just doesn't have the usual rack of what's normally found on our part of the river bottom. I'm guessing bad genetics as far as the rack is concerned. He also has strange colorations. His face is very gray and white and he has shades of brown and gray on his body.
![]() ![]() ![]() Also, what would you guys say for the age of him? He has a short face, but he had a very big body. He didn't have the sucked in stomach at all. There was a perfectly straightline from his chest to the rear of his body. Anyways just thought I'd share. Edit: could someone put this on the actual thread? I don't know why it won't work for me on here. Thanks Cameron |

RE: first archery buck 18.5" wide 7pt
Very nice, he looks to be a mature buck, its hard to tell from the pics but I'd say he is atleast 3-1/2 years old. That neck is amazing, looks like it came from a canadian buck!

RE: first archery buck 18.5" wide 7pt
Thanks for the compliments guys. I was guessing 3.5 yrs old too. The rack just doesn't match the body is all.
|
RE: first archery buck 18.5" wide 7pt
He sure has the look of a mature buck. Huge neck and thick shoulders. I would say at least 3.5 years. Just didn't have what it takes to grow a massive rack. But a real nice deer. CONGRATS!!!!

RE: first archery buck 18.5" wide 7pt
The only accurate way to age a deer is by their teeth wear...
Here's a pretty good link, which shows pictures, up to 5.5 years of age with an additional jaw image from a 9.5 year-old deer. http://www.huntstats.com/basics.htm Without looking at the teeth, I would actually guess this buck to be on the downward side of age (i.e. over 5). The gray hairs on the face are usually a good indication that the buck is starting to really age, and after 4.5 to 5.5 years smaller racks are typical, as the minerals are needed to maintain bone structure. RE: first archery buck 18.5" wide 7pt
Congrats!!!!!!!!! Excellent deer my friend!
He is either an old deer with a declining rack, OR, a hell of a young deer. I would guess that he is a 3 1/2 year old. Just a guess. He looks very strong from the pics and the lack of mass may be due to growing such a body versus the rack. I am basing my guess on deer like this that I have seen in Wisconsin. Whatever it is, great buck! |
