Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
Last night I tried hunting in a new spot. Since I did not have much time to hunt and did not have a tree stand up, I just stood up against a tree. As it was getting dark I had anice buck (120 class)come in and was standing within five yards of me. It stood there right in myshooting lanefor almost a minute before leaving. I spent the whole time trying to get my release to click on the release loop. I finaly got it on after the deer had left. The more I think about it, I should have just shot with my fiingers or clipped the release onto the string and shot. Even though that wouldn't work for a longer shot it should have been fine for less than five yards. I think next year I am going to switch back to shooting without the aid of the loop. It makes me more accurate, but it always causes me difficulty in those times when I can least afford it. I don't think that the somewhat tighter groups are worth it. What do you guys think? Have any of you had similar problems?

RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
What kind of a release are you using? My local archery shop stated not to use a thumb release type
with a loop. |
RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
I use the caliper type of release that you pul the trigger like a gun. The problem seems to come because the loop does not stay open and with one hand holding the bow handle it is imposible to open the loop in order to get it in the calipers.

RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
sounds like you just need a better/new loop
|
RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
I agree with gastler. My loop is always open and I have never had a problem getting my release on and this is my first year using a release.

RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
Sounds like your loop isn't right. It should go on with no problem at all. That last magic hour mine stays on the loop and ready. You just never know.

RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
Or you could have been shaking so bad with a deer that close to you and just couldn't get it on there. :D

RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
I would first get a better loop material. Allen makes a very good string loop material. They come in a three pack and are not burned so you can custom your loop to the size you want. It's afirm and thick loop material so it will hold it's shape and won't wear out.
You can also try to attach your release before the deer get that close. I usually attach mine as soon as I hear something moving. Sometimes I will even sit there with the released attached. I never hang my bow, it's always in my hand resting on my lap. I never want to miss the opportunity to get a shot because I have to reach for my bow. Good luck, I hope you get another crack at him. |
RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
try one of those metal ones, i got one for my i think it was called an ultra nock or something and i love it

RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
I do not use a loop, clip on and shoot!!
I have fond Winners Choice string serving last a long time, in the heat of the moment I do not want to mess around with a loop. |
RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
forgot to add i was using a caliper release.
|
RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
tough break . put a different loop on it and see if that helps
|
RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
I shoot tight groups out to 35 yards withouth a loop.
|
RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
If you were just standing there holding your bow, why didn't you already have it on the loop?
|
RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
fetzeriiif....youre out of the loop.....ha ha ha....at five yards..I wouldve tried to stab him with the arrow..ha ha aha

RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
It was just before dark on an overcast day, so I needed to turn on my sight light in order to see my pins better. I also didn't have a lot of time to do this in advance, because the deer kind of appeared out of nowhere. I hunted there the next night and had my release clipped on for the last hour, but I didn't see anything.
Thanks for the tips guys. |
RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
Only thing I can add to the suggestion of using good quality loop material is to change it out before hunting season every year, so you've got a fresh one to work with, and keep it heavily waxed. The wax will keep it open and stiff for quick and easy hookups. It will also lubricate the loop and keep it from fraying so it will stay in good condition a lot longer.

RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
Some releases are made for loops and some caliper/jaw styles have jaws that are to wide to easily hook to a release. I wouldn't shoot without a loop any longer, I use a scott rhino release, its designed for a loop and shoots with the index finger, no jaws to close, just a post to hook inside the loop and ready to shoot.
Whoever said not to use a thumb release with a loop is dead wrong, thumb releases, such as the Carter release line, are EXCELLENT for loops. However BT releases with no trigger need adjusting to be set right for a loop, has to do with the angle of the sear before firing. Most thumb releases can be shot with/without a loop, when shooting with a loop, they normally have a piece of loop material on the release which you wrap around the string, back to the release gate. This in effect is a loop, its just on the release, not the string. My wife hunts with a Carter Insatiable release (thumb style) and a loop, once in the tree she hooks the release onto the loop and there it hangs til shooting time. |
RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
As much as I love the splitfire releases, they have the same problems from time to time. Two weeks ago I was trying to get my release on my loop to arrow a hog, and couldnt get it to go. If it had been a nice deer, i would have been P.O.ed. Keep your release lubed with graphite and it helps a lot.

RE: Blown Opportunity----Release Loop????
An open design release like Short and Sweet made by Tru Ball Will greatly help with this problem.I have never had a problem with calipers but when I shot them,I shot thousands of arrows a week and it was second nature to me.
It just slides in from the side and doesn't need to be opened to get it on. I have hooked mine up while looking behind me at turkeys. www.truball.com/ShortNSweet_S2.html |
