ILL PUBLIC GROUND BUCK! In the words of the Lakosky's...BBD!

Well in the last two days I logged 19 hours in the tree and in the week I've logged 30+ in the tree...Pulled an all day sit Wed. from 6a-dark(520p)...Yesterday I sat from 7a-3p when I shot my BIG BOY....in those 19 hours I saw only 3 deer including this one...2 small six pointers and this....I was hunting public ground in Brown County known as Buckhorn Ranch. I lost my private ground this year after 9 years to a lease so this makes this deer BITTER SWEET!...No real story...Got in my tree at 7am and sat till 11a when I saw a little 6 pt...come in at the bottom of a ridge stopping at each ridge bottom scent checking...Then at 12p I had two hunters come in...one went to the bottom of the ridge where the six pt was and the other hunter tried to put his stand up 40 yards behind me...I whistled and waved and he moved on.......at 3pm the guy below me was rattling and grunting so I started grunting with him...then I heard the footsteps coming on the top of the ridge across from me....I looked over and it looked like a monster walking thru the woods...he stopped at the bottom of the ravine that seperates the two ridge lines and looked around so I gave two soft grunts...He came right to my stand and stopped at 10 yards and looked up at me in full draw...he was slightly quartering in and almost head on....I knew he made me and all I could do was let him go or take a chance...I took what most will think and I know is probably an unethical shot but I shot for a spot between his neck and shoulder plate...I shot and he ran 100yds...crashed....got up ran another 100yds..crashed....got up and ran into a creek and stopped...never to move again!!!! when he crashed the first time he broke what was left of the arrow off..4" that didn't penetrate...When I field dressed him I found the rest of the arrow up in him(appx 23" of arrow)and a big hole in the middle of his heart....Muzzy 3 blade did it again for me...I haven't scored him or anything but have really showed him off to friends and everybody thinks he will go 160 or better....about 19-20" inside and g2 and 3's 12" or better...Now if I can just figure out how to upload the picture...

RE: ILL PUBLIC GROUND BUCK! In the words of the Lakosky's...BBD!

Never saw him befor but knew that this ground has big deer...I sit in a North Starr Ultralight Hunter climbing stand....I started sitting all day last year....It gets boring when you don't see anything but it is all rewarded when you see a deer like this...let alone get to take him...

Edit: No the arrow didn't pass thru...it had 23" all up in him...it was slightly quartering in but close to head on...Arrow went thru the heart and broadhead was thru the diaphram and in the guts...The heart had a nice star pattern(3 blades) going thru the middle of it...

I have to hand it to you, to sit that many hours and hanging in there while seeing so few deer is a great story. To get that monster on public land is great. Congrats n a whopper buck. By the way, has anyone ever mistaken you for Lance Berkman?

I don't care what ne one says. You should always take that shot if it's presented. Too many people don't understand the anatomy of a deer to take that shot, good to hear T.V. and talk didn't get the better of you, otherwise you wouldn't have killed that deer. Congratulations on a job well done.

Congratulations on a great buck. That sucker is a dandy!!

I also commend you on sitting in your stand during some boring hours of not seeing anything. I have to fight the desire to get down and get on with some other projects when the deer are not moving at all!! I guess I'm always thinking about what elseI need to be doing. It didn't used to be that way, but it's been that way several times this year!!

I need to learn to fight boredom better!

Concerning the shot placement, I know that we always prefer a broadside shot, BUT I've often felt that if a deer was close, maybe under 20 yds and facing you, it would be easy to put one between the front legs, and it would have to take out the heart and or a lung. Of course, if you hit high, you might have a bad situation, but if you hit high broadside, it is basically the same. I am suprised that you didn't have more of a downward angle giving an exit hole.
If you were in a tree and a buck was 15 yds out, nearly facing you, and you slipped an arrow between the front legs, looks like it would definitely be a good shot hitting heart and probably only one lung.

Congrats, great deer.

Shot placement and choicewas not all that bad, my buddy killed a 196" non-typical 3 years ago with the same exact shot. He was shooting 85 gr. spitfires and hit in the crease, at the neck and front shoulder, arrow went fletchings deep and through the heart. He only went 35 yards.

I prefer a broadside or quartering away shot, but if that is the only shot I am presented, I will take it with confidence. Great job once again!!

RE: ILL PUBLIC GROUND BUCK! In the words of the Lakosky's...BBD!

Congratulations! I don't see a problem with the shot. I look at it this way, if you are confident in your shot, and you do *know* the anatomy of a deer, take it. A neck/head on shot is actually very effective considering there are so many vital options to hit, the windpipe, the heart, lungs, etc... you take the chance of hitting one or all of them. Also, your chance of wounding the deer are decreased because the brown available to hit with head on shots is a heck of a lot LESS when a deer is facing you, if you are off just a little, you will shoot right past, allowing the deer to walk away unwounded, if you hit it, chances are you've got a lethal shot put on it. To be able to hit that limited amount of space takes lots of practice and good shooting skills. All bowhunters know (or should know) their capabilities. You obviously knew you were capable of making the shot, knew you accuracy in shooting could get it done.

Kudos to you for your dedication and hard work this year. Patience always pays off, maybe not right away, but you will eventually reap the rewards of it. That deer is awesome! You deserve a pat or two on the back! :)

Hey Man, Congrats on the deer. Once in a lifetime buck, enjoy it!!! We saw several bucks last week. Passed on 4 125-135, saw a 170 but couldn't get it close enough.
