and I just couldn't pull it off. [:@] There was a tree between him and I, and I wasn't going to force the shot. He needed to take two more steps and I had him dead to rights. It never happened, he spooked and ran off, then came back later and chased does around my stand all night. Tonight was without a doubt one of my best nights in the woods in a long time. Saw activity from the time I hit the woods until well after dark as I had does all around and underneath me.

I'll be back at it Thurs or Friday to hopefully get a crack at this guy. He's awesome. Not too wide, but great mass, good beams, nice tine lenght, and a nice dark coloration just like the other one I shot a few hundred yards away. :D

You gotta love the rut!

Is that the buck that is trying to saw down the tree with that rub you posted? That's too bad you didn't get the opportunity to close the deal. Good luck with him.

I had almost the same thing happen to me today. I had an 8 pointer come in to 15 yards broad side and needed him to take one more step from behind the tree and he decided to turn around and go the other way. Funny how deer just sense when danger is around.

Where you hunting? We are only allowed one buck with a bow here in IA. You already shot a buck. Are you out of state or allowed two in IL?

As an IL resident you can shoot two bucks per year with any combination of gun or bow. I choose to try and take both of mine with a bow.

Hopefully I'll be able to connect on another nice one soon so I can sleep in for the rest of the year. :D

Good luck Justin, hope all goes well on your next hunt. To bad you werent using the golden eagle I bet it would have cracked right through whatever was blocking the shot. lol

That shows GREAT discipline on your part. Great job! I think going through the exercise of controlling your shot, even to the last second, will make you a better hunter. Sounds like your hunt was a success even though you still have your tag...

Justin:

The same bag limit applies here in NC, too, although I think NC residents MAY get a 3rd buck in the Eastern zones.

I have one more to go......whether I use it or not. I'm gonna put our buddy RobPA on a nice OLD buck when he gets down to visit.....though he MIGHT go 50"!....lol

That's the beauty of having friends in town to hunt. You can have them do your dirty work!.....and you still have a tag!!....lol

Jeff

Well.....it's true.:D

Good job Justin. Great discipline for sure. Hard to do, but it's the best choice. Good luck!
