Shot A Doe Tonight Question HELP

My dad shot a doe tonight wefound the arrow it had dark red blood and long white hair on the shaft. The arrow also had a chunk of fat on the broadhead and a spot on the shaft. The vanes also were covered with dark red blood. We started to track and had good puddles of dark red blood. Then as we tracked futher and further the spots got smaller and smaller so we backed out. My dad said after he shot her the deer just walked away with its tail up but then turned around and walked back were she came from. Going back tommorow afternoon to look for her and was wondering what everyone else thought before I go. Thanks

Well the white hairs would indicate it came out very low. Sounds like a gut shot to me. Good luck.

Yeah, probably a gut shot however i think you may have got some liver giving you the dark red blood. She will probably lay down before too long and expire. Good luck tomorrow.

Does sound like you got some liver there. Was there any small bits of vegetable matter mixed in with the blood on the shaft/fletching?

If you didn't push her, and gave her plenty of time, she won't be far at all.

Does the arrow smell? Or is there any chewed food matter? If so, I would say you got a gutshot...and the deep red makes me believe you hit the liver. If there is no smell/particles...then I would think mainly liver. The liver should put her down quickly. Keep track of the general way she was traveling...she shouldn't be too far.

Keep us updated.

Glad to hear there wasno food on the arrow, although stomach and intestinal shot deer are recoverable if left to die in bed.

Dark blood is liver or guts. It does sound like liver, so a few hours and it will be over.

Was your dad in a tree stand? How far was the deer when he shot. THe white hair could indicate the exit wound, not necessarily the entrance.

The blood, reaction of the deer, and arrow all sound like a liver to me. Hopefully he didn't push it last night.

Dark blood usually indicates muscle blood/liver. Ive noticed gut shoots usually have a greenish appearence, with less of a dark color too it. Kinda like watered down blood. If you havent pushed her, you should be able to find her. If not, im sorry, you will get the next one. keep your heads up.

Brian, I'm with the others on this. Sounds like a liver shot and possibly nicked the guts as well. The white hair probably indicates the exit hole. If you didn't push her last night, she shouldn't have gone far before laying down. Liver shots are fatal, but not always quickly. Looks like the rain will hold off so you'll have plenty of time to look for her. Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

Redneck, you should find her within 100 yards or so.
If you lose the trail, look for beds. I liver won't heal up the way muscle does. She'll keep bleeding in bed unless guts are clogging the hole.

Check the thickest cover, and all trails in the area.
She's still there unless something else bumped her out of bed before she died.

Good luck.
