Some thoughts on scents...
 

So as I was sitting in my stand one nite last week, and watching a couple does in heat run around, I thought of something that I never thought of before. I could actually smell those does myself from 30 yards away when the air current headed in my direction. When I climbed down out of my stand, the odor was still present on the ground, and I began thinking about this. I have never had good luck using scents, and it dawned on me that perhaps I'm not using enough of the stuff. Seriously, if I can smell that doe while up in a tree, that's one hel of an odor right? I normally put a few drops of that stuff on a wick and hang it or whatever.....I'm wondering if that is enough to do the job?? Maybe I need to take about a pint of that junk out in the woods and soak a hand towel with it and hang it in a tree? I'm not saying this to sound sarcastic or anything, but it's got me thinking. Maybe a few drops isn't enough to pull a buck in from 50, 100 or whatever yards away? I'm interested in hearing what you guys think on this..

I use alot. I've been down wind of bucks in rut and smelled them before I've seen them. I also put it in a small spray bottle and give it a spray about every hour from my tree stand.

You gotta figure when a doe takes a leak, she's dropping more than a couple drops. I use quite a bit of the stuff myself.

I have had more success when using a lot of the stuff versus being conservative. This Saturday, I had a buck come in when I used quite a bit on a scent wick.

Thats why, when using a drag rag, you have to refresh it every little bit. If not then it is stronger at the start of the drag and weaker as you get closer to your stand site. And when it is like that, the buck will follow the trail towards the strongest scent, which is away from your stand back towards the start of your drag.

I confirmed this fact one day with a deer dog. I used a drag rag, and the dog kept trying to follow it away from my stand back to where I started, because that was the direction of the strongest scent. Which was directly away from where I wanted him to go. And, I have also seen bucks follow the reverse trail. So refresh often during the drag to bring them TO your stand instead of away from it.
