RE: Advice need on gut shot
I done the same thing this past Saturday. Four does came up directly behind my tree about 30 yards out. I only had one clear spot to shoot at them and they were on the move. I waited and took the largest on the move and I underestimated the travel and time it takes to hit at that distance. I seen it was a bad shot so I made my mind up to give her till that evening to die (learned this from past experience, unfortunately). Little did I know she bedded down not too far from my trail out of the thicket and I jumped her up. It really burnt my ass but there was nothing I could do. This was around 9am that morning. I went back around 5 that evening and started trailing her and about 80 yards from there I found a lot of guts on the ground. After another 20 yards or so I found her dead in a vine thicket. First doe I've ever taken and being that gruesome it made me feel bad for a few days. My shot was so far back that it went through her back hams.
It was definitely a learning experience. I've always told myself that I wouldn't grunt at one to get them to stop for fear of spooking them but after this I will try the method if the same circumstances happen again. Sorry for hijacking the thread, I just had to vent a little and let you know don't feel bad. *hit happens to everyone and you learn from it. |
RE: Advice need on gut shot
Like the others said, wait until the morning, she should be close by. Good luck, keep us informed!
