I've always wondered that.....and what the official rule is. Say like if you called the DNR. What is the official rule. Say I gut shot one and let it lay down, and another hunter spots it while I let it lay all day sneaks up to it and shoots it and kills it. Who's deer?

Thats a million dollar question.If the deer is hit mortally and just running dead and someone just happens to put another bullet in him ,you know he was about dead anyway then i believe the first shooter should get him.But if property lines get involved it might be a different story.Now if the deer is crippled or gut shot and someone puts him down then that shooter should get him.Thats how it usually works around here ,but people are funny about that kind of stuff especially big bucks.

I've wondered that myself... I have never been in that situation. I guess the lethal shot takes the deer. But, then, who's to say, maybe the other hunter DID make a lethal shot and the deer is still running, just hasn't gone down yet.
I've wondered what would happen if I was hunting with my husband or another hunting buddy and they texted me and told me they shot a deer that is headed my way, should I shoot it again, just to make sure, or do I let it go, holding out faith they made a good shot? I was worried I'd have to deal with this yesterday when my buddy shot his deer. I thought, oh great, it's gonna come my way and I'm gonna take a shot, only to find two entry and exit wounds!
Hard telling, hopefully both hunters would be civil enough to figure it out between themselves.

If one of the hunters is a youth, he/she gets it.
If not, first lethal shot (though some states say whoever "possesses" it)
If there's a fight, the other guy gets it (I am not arguing over a hunk of meat with an armed man (him)who is proven to be unstable enough to be arguing over a hunk of meat with an armed man (me))
