Do you think this will work???
Well once again the bucks wont come within range. They keep going into the woods below me. So do you think this will work? After being aggravated once again that they wont come close to me I got out of my stand to come back to the house and when I got to where they are walking in I pissed on there trail in hope they will smell that and come up closer to me. Do you think that will move them?? They have done this to me over and over again. The only time I had deer come close to me I couldn't get a shot as they came from behind me and to my left ( I'm left handed ) and I couldn't position myself for a shot without getting bagged. They never did see me as they just kept eating and walked off slow. I have had the wind in my favor every time they cross the road and they just wont come up to where I'm at. They never run off they just walk along slow and threw the woods in front of me but never close. Moving my stand isn't really an option as there is no trees big enough to put it on. So what do you all think??? Thanks for the input

RE: Do you think this will work???
I personally wouldnt have done that, but it could work. I would have tried to move my stand down wind of the path that you kept seeing them on. Where i hunt, deer see humans every day and are not that scared of them. As long as you arent too close to them, i can get away with alot when it comes to scent and access to my stands, but once again im hunting mostly in neighborhoods, so pissing in the woods doesnt bother them. Like i mentioned, it might work but might not. If they keep coming down that path, move your stand. Also remember that your bow hunting and that is the nature of the sport. It can be very frustrating at times, but when it all comes together nothing can compare. good luck.

RE: Do you think this will work???
from everything i've ever experienced, those deer don't care. I've pissed in the woods many times and had deer walk right by it, they didn't even think twice. I don't think anything will change really. Sorry:(

RE: Do you think this will work???
Human pee doesnt effect deer movement. I found out from experience. Oiss on a scrape one day and put a few leaves on the top and come back a day or so later youll see that scrape was hit very hard.

RE: Do you think this will work???
actually that might keep them on that trail.....deer can not tell the difference between human and other deer piss.....the only thing they smell is the ammonia. Everything else breaks down quickly. By walking on the trail, you may have left scent from your boots which may scare them a bit but by pissing, you might actually attract them to the trail even more cause they think it is a new deer in the area....

RE: Do you think this will work???
I'm not walking on there trail. There is a dug road that goes around the property and that is what I walk up on and my stand is just off the road and is over looking that and some woods. Like I had said moving my stand closer to where they are is NOT an option as there are no trees to support it. What do you think will make them walk up the road a little further? Before season when I was scouting they where walking up the road and by where my stand is and now they moved. There is alsotwo rubs right behind me and a good trail right above me where I can shoot but they don't seam to be using it much now.

RE: Do you think this will work???
how far from your stand are you seeing them?
|
RE: Do you think this will work???
Probably 40 yards or so but there are also trees in the way for a shot. I wouldn't take a 40 yard shot. I have practiced it but don't think that is a good range to be shooting a bow at deer and still get good penetration with my set up. I'm only shooting about 60lbs.

RE: Do you think this will work???
I watched a hunting show one time that said if you put stuff in the way of a deer trail they will go around it becuase they like to take the easiest route. Maybe try to make brush pile or put a tree across the trail in the way. The only thing is this might make them go around it the other way and be even further from you. Could build/buy a ground blind closer to them?

RE: Do you think this will work???
No pee is pee they don't know the difference or can't tell human pee from, all the hundreds of dif animals that pee.
But why don't you just make a ground blind or find a place to hide by the trail down farther. Just find a place to blend in about 30 yards away from the trail so you can get away with more movement and snipe one. Sounds like that's your only option. If they have moved already because of human scent don't make them move again because of it or they will become really causious and might just leave the area all together. |
RE: Do you think this will work???
I tend to agree with MO Archer. Build whata "forced funnel". If you drop a tree to force them to go around it and get in your shooting lanes they will most likely also hit the tree hard for the greener leaves they can't usually reach.

RE: Do you think this will work???
I have thought of sitting in the tall stuff but figured they would see me or smell me. I will have to give it a try. There is an area of tail grassy stuff that might conceal me. Will have to try that this evening. Thanks everyone for the input. This is only my second year bow hunting whitetails. I got a nice big doe last year in only a matter of 3 or 4 days hunting and saw lots of them and lots of movement. But the rut was in at the beginning of bow last year so I guess I got spoiled my first year out with the bow.

RE: Do you think this will work???
There's a prouduct out on the market called BowHuntersSetup its a 5 oz. spray bottle that you use as an attractent.
My friend and I use this on the bottom of our boots and walk around our stands , it really works pretty good once the deer smell it they'll follow that trail. We also spray this stuff on leaves and limbs within bow range and the deer will eat the leaves and lick the limbs. You can get this prouduct at Cabela's and it cost about $ 10.00 a bottle , I don't know if any other store sell it. |

But--what if they go around it in the other direction?

RE: Do you think this will work???
I disagree with the "pee" thing. As a young boy my father always pissed in a bottle, so that is what I did. As I got older I started hunting with friends and thier dads who pissed where ever they felt like going, and I did too a number of times. I've had deer not care, and I've had deer run the other way. The times the ran the other way they looked like does who almost walked through estrus doe piss. Not sure if you've ever sat out estrus piss before the rut, but does do not want to step in it. I'm guess that this is due to them not wanting a buck to think they are in heat when they're not...
I can personally tell the difference between, human, deer, dog and cat pee because of my history with all of them. What would make anyone think that a deer can't tell? 90% of hunters walk about fifty yards into the woods, sit on the ground in the same clothes they wore in their truck, eat, smoke and pee on the ground. The deer know these people are there, or have been there. I'm pretty sure that they know who the pee belongs to. If I walk into a house that has a bunch of cats and they piss everywhere I can tell. Do you know why I can tell? Because I smell cat piss! I've got a dog, who used to be a puppy, and he would sometimes pee in the house, so I know what his pee smells like. I have four kids. As youngsters they have accidents, and guess what - I know what their pee smells like too! But, for whatever reason, sometimes deer are curious and will be attracted to human pee, but that seems like a lofty way tojustify not wanting to deal with carrying a pee bottle to me. I've never had deer wind me and turn and leave like they have when I've pissed on the ground. Dogs roll around in poo and road kill to cover their scent. And before they were domesticated they buried their pee and poo in an effort to be more successful hunters, but deer can't tell... |
RE: Do you think this will work???
Try using a deer decoy instead...

RE: Do you think this will work???
I have thought of a decoy and they seam to be curious to the Mackenzie in my back yard.It would be a little hard to carry out though.I remembered that there is a 6 foot dead tree in some tall grass about 25 to 30 yards from where they are crossing. I am going to try sitting there next timeand see what happens. Here is the pic I took about 3 months ago in my back yard,if you didn't see it in my other post.
