RE: What does this 9 pt score?

I shot this deer in 1996 in Ill. I was trying for him. He was the boss buck in the area. I posted this because the score is deceiving. He was 5 1/2 years old and grossed 132 even. With deductions, he nets 115 3/8 as a 6 pointer. He has a 16 4/8 inside spread, 23" beams, 10 1/2" g-2s, 5 2/8 bases and 6 4/8 in sticker points. He had 16 5/8 in deductions. He field dressed at 220# with the antlers still touching the floor. His tall, narrow, thick rack was built for fighting and he had the attitude to go with it. All the other bucks gave him a wide berth. I measured his neck just under the jaw bone at 28". My taxidermist had to order a canadian form to fit his measurements. This is why I believe that the gross score is a better indicator of the true size of a buck. You tell people that you got a 115" 9 pt and right away they're thinking 2 1/2 year old instead of something with 138" of horn on his head, weighing over 220#. Photos and net scores can be deceiving!

GregH,
I couldn't agree more. I think deductions are a rediculous way of juding the size of a deer. I was going to guess 110 netbefore you posted the answer, but like you said that is one heck of a buck and it is neat that you were after him and got him. I don't understand why P&Y takes dedcutions from the typicals. Of course, it isn't going to change, but that is my beef.

No matter what he scored Greg he's a trophy in my book. But you could have at least let him get out of the truck before you shot him. Come on, you don't believe in fair chase hunts?

Thats a nice buck for my hunting area, net score really means nothing to me, I'd be hard pressed to let him walk late in the season. Maybe early season.

Man I am good. My guess before I saw the results was a gross score of 130 to 135. I don't care about a net score. Someone asks me what my deer scored, they are getting a gross score for sure. Would I have shot that buck? Hell Yeah

Nets are for fishing! I hate net scores. They are stupid imo. Gross is the way to go. The only score I look at on my deer.

Nice buck. In Virginia, he'd be considered a monster buck! I appreciate the education on scoring.
