What's the latest you've shot a deer

I shot this guy Saturday night. It was getting dark. As he ran off after the shot I looked at my cell phone for the time. It was 6:56 PM.........6:57 Is when legal shooting hours where up......Too close for comfort;) It was tough to see but I was sure I could make the shot.......My pins where still bright, and I could make the buck out good enough to confidently make the shot!...

Any opinions on this .......Would you have shot that late??

Well, I drilled him He went not even 100 yards. Field dress he weighed 180 pounds:DHe doesn't score as good as I thought he would when I shot him. But he's still a nice buck for my area!!

If it's legal shooting light......YES. I'd have shot him, too.

Congrats on a fine buck.....(and the beautiful little doe!).

I normally don't like shooting right at dark with my bow. If the right buck walks up then I will make an exception. I would have shot just like you did. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the buck you killed. He is a nice one, especially with a bow. He would also be a real good one where I hunt.

I have shot bucks before when it was so dark I couldn't count points but could just make out the basic size of the rack (i.e. wide, tall, and good mass). As long as you can make out the outline of the body well and where the shoulder is, I don't see any problem.

Nice buck indeed!

I have taken two "last 5 minutes of legal shooting time" shots and made good on them. Both shots were less than 15 yds, and were in Nov, after trees had shed much of their leaves. In our early MD season, it can get "too dark"(for me) in the deep woods, even with plenty of legal time left.

It's not a bad idea to include practice sessions in the late evening hours, and know beforehand how your eyesight, pins, &peep are going to work out in diminished light, especially without an orange dot or bulls-eye to guide your aim...

Mighty nice buck there.
I have shot pretty late, borderline shooting time, and everytime I have connected.
Once, I let fly at 30 yards when the buck was dead broadside. I could not see the arrow, but heard the telltale thawack of an arrow hitting the shoulder. He only ran 30 yards. When I gutted him, I found the broadhead had actually stopped in the heart, and as he ran the broadhead just cut the living daylights out of it.
If you can place the pin, take the shot, that is how I look at it.

There are some things you might want to keep to yourself... you could start here.[&:]

Well, there was this one time back in the 70's when me and my buddies had this spotlight and..... Hey, how long is the statute of limitations?

I wouldn't jump to conclusions too fast. If Abarofsoap has an early start to his season he could have shot legally. When are season opened we had legag shooting time til 7:47.

I don't get what is wrong with this statement unless he can't hunt in early to mid Sept. During our season opening week (N.C.)the sun set between 7:38 and 7:00 which would have put legal time ending as late as 8:08. I don't know where he hunts though.quote]

Right, here in Okla. you can shoot 30 minutes past sunset, so you can get some pretty late kills early in the season.

Opening week of season in 1998. About 8:00 or a couple of minutes before.
