What does "G" stand for in G2, G3, etc?

This may be a stupid question but my buddy just asked me what the "G" stands for when referring to tines. Anyone know?

I haven't got a clue why they picked "G" to designate which tine you are talking about.

You'd think that any person with "common sense" would have picked "T" since it is a Tine.

But then if common sense was so commonwhy don't more people haveit?
