RE: tree stand " what is a safe distance
I've always heard 12-15 feet if you are covered well. And 17 to 20 feet if you are in the open. But I will say this I was 20 feet in a tree this weekend and had a doe come in to about 4 yds. and she saw me. I like 25 feet. But most people will say thats too high. But Im comfortable with it. But remember the higher you go the short distance you can shoot!

RE: tree stand " what is a safe distance
I remember reading somewhere that falls from 25' or greater are usually fatal , that sounds like a good guideline to me . ;)

RE: tree stand " what is a safe distance
I like to be 25 feet up. It all depends on your available cover. I have been ae low as 10 foot, due to the cover that was around me. I prefer to have the added visability of 15 plus feet. I also wear a safety harness regardless of how high I am. A fall from two feet can be fatal if you land wrong. One thing I always have in my back pack is climbing steps, in case of a fall I can get to my screw in stepsand hopefully get down or at least pressure off my legs.

go as high as you can go safely(....depends on the tree thickness, type, knots, splits, wind.......)unless your right on top of your intended shot. trajectory can make things tricky if you dont practice these shots. I've made some great ground blinds this year out of cut saplings & brushand am hunting on the ground more and more...im seeing more deer this year as well, due to being able to set up anywhere anyplace in about a half hour...come back 2 days later2letthings settle down....and kill!!!

RE: tree stand " what is a safe distance
i try to stay at least a min of 12 feet in my climber but laddertsnads i go min of 15.

RE: tree stand " what is a safe distance
I try to get to about 17' or so, higher if I can. All depends on the cover you have really. I used to be more afraid of heights, so like 14' was about all I could do.

RE: tree stand " what is a safe distance
I like right around 20' but that is in fairly open terrain also depends on how windy remember if wind is really ripping and you are up pretty high the tree gets thinner and you are like on a ride at the fair. Ive literally gotten sick from swaying to and fro. You can stay on the ground if you use the wind right especially if scent aware with scentblocker and all the other great products out there.

Well when I was taking the OSHA 10 training course. It stated that falls from 6 feet can be fatal. If you climb a tree wear a harness
