It's possible as long as the winds in your favor, your causious and alert, your scents under control, and of course if the leaves arn't too dry. I've snuck up on a few, even killed a few doing this

Sure I did, back in my early days around Canyon Lake north of San Antonio. It was a great learning ground. Now I just climb up and hunt.

I stalked within 40 yards of a feeding doe last year during the late season. I was feeling pretty impressed with myself by using trees etc to move closer to her. Then she started walking away with a full stomach and I couldn't move fast enough to gain on her and stay quiet at the same time! (plus I was running out of time)

I've stalked them in standing corn before and that's alot of fun. You need a windy day when they can't hear you.

In the woods, I'd obviously play the wind, go SLOW, and wait for a day when the ground is wet.

Yes, I was on my way to my tree when I crested the hill to see an 8 point that I passed up earlier several times feeding. I said to myself it would be awesome to shoot him from the ground. The wind was blowing and in my favor. I was scooting closer and closer. Was about 35 yrds out and he was behinda tree. I took another step and the whole herd took off. Never saw the other deer. They must have been watching me the whole time.

Personally, it is my favorite way to hunt. Granted, you get busted a lot more but there is something about putting my senses against the animals that I really like. It's kind of like a head to head match.

When elk hunting, I sit only until I can see and then I begin to stalk. I stalk deer in the morning and evening and stalk elk all day. The key that I have found is to have very very heavy wind in your favor or rain that will cover your noise. If you try to stalk on a perfectly quiet day, you need to be of sniper quality. Every time I have been busted it is because I lose focus on what I am doing and begin to move too fast.

Once you do it, you will be hooked. There will be no more reason to sit on that stinkin stand.

If you are hunting public land, be careful. I have made several hunters mad by stalking up on them in the stand at first and last light.

If your #1 goal is to kill a deer or get a nice buck, then stalking is not the way to go, but for shear excitement I don't think it gets any better. I also think that the other posts are sugar coating it. At least in Ohio, you are lucky to get a shot over 20 yardsin the thick underbrush. Spot and stalk whitetail with a bow isn't tough, it is next to impossible. However, there is nothing more exciting than actually getting one from the ground IMO.

To put things in a historical perspective, treestands have only been around for 25 years or so. Before that everyone bowhunted from the ground or sat on a limb.
