This one always kicks a beehive. TS I understand and respect your opinion. ...all I ask is that you respect my opinion and others on the issue. No one is right or wrong, it is something we all need to decide for ourselves and ultimately it is what we can live with.... I let my experience dictate what I do and I'm comfortable with that. In the end we are all hunters sharing the same passion.
Hey mez, you couldn't have summerized the point any better than you did.:)

My intent w/ the posed question really wasn't to start such an uproar...but for the record, I'm not judging anyoneeither, just stating my opinion and asking all of you for yours. Thanksa bunch to all.

RE: Maximum Confident Shooting Range???

My effective bow range was determined through my preparation for my archery elk hunt this year. It is 40 yards maximum. I feel confident that I can make a well placed lethal shot at that yardage while staring down at an animal...

Regards,

GS

I am not trying to argumentative, just curious. If you will take a shot at 50, 60, 70 yards, at what point do you decide to take that shot and not try to coax the deer a little closer or just hope for better range on the next hunt?

The farthest I will shoot under perfect conditions is 35 yds. I prefer them less than 25. The first deer i ever shot was at 37, but if that opportunity presented itself again today, I wouldnt take it, just because I'm not 100% that I would hit the vitals.

10 or 20 yards is a slam dunk for me other than maybe freak accident.
But the question I have is- where i hunt on public land i can't get closer than 40 or 50 yards to a deer when im in a blind, so even though i can hit a grapefruit sized target 9 out of 10 times at 40 yards, is 40 yrds+ so far that deer jump the string before the arrow hits?

Also using a good whitetail setup (compound in 60# draw, 430 grain cut on contact arrows/heads, with probably 63 foot/lbs of energy) What is the max range that this setup gives lethal kinetic energy to a whitetail? (even if i can hit a metal ram target with a scoped .22 at 100 yards the slug may not have the kinetic energy to knockdown like it does at 50 yards)

I would have to reword that a little...Max effective range is 20 yards. I base this by being able to consistantly being able to hit my "pie plate" at 99 percent...I cant do that at longer distances...

RE: Maximum Confident Shooting Range???

Up to 50 yards is my effective range. I am very accomplished at 50yards and actually did take a nice 8pt that was a solid 50 yard shot last weekend. The arrow zipped through the lungs 3 inches from where I intended it to go.

To be honest, I have a dead zone at 20 yards that I struggle with. I can shoot incredible groups at 40-50 yards but somehow struggle with 20 yard shots. Last year, I missed a monster 8 pt at 20 yards. Go figure. This year I drill a nice 8 pt at 50 yards. Keep in mind that I only would take a shot of 40-50 if the conditions where perfect, as they were with the 8pt I just shot. I guess you have to evaluate every situation as they come. Thats the beauty of bow hunting. Every situation is different and you must adapt or eat tag soup.

I have three pins on my sight, 20, 30, & 40yds and I have used them all, although it's been a while since I shot past 30 yards. Most of my stands are located where there are no over 40yard shots available. I like that because then I can't be tempted to take a shot I'm not 100% confident in.I practice out to 50 and I am pretty consistant, this is with just a hold over of my 40yard pin.

When hunting I keep my shots at 40 and under....... works for me.

RE: Maximum Confident Shooting Range???

My maximum shooting range varies greatly depending on circumstances.

When the weather and wind is right, and when I feel solid, I would not think twice about a 50 yard shot. Buck or doe, it doesn`t matter.

But if the wind is up, even a little bit, or if I come to full draw and just cannot get steady.......well then 35 yards is just too far.

Every day, and every situation is a new one for me.

Sorry, i said i should have about 63 ft/lbs of energy with a 60# and 430 grain arrows-- that was a miscalculation-- i should have only about 53 ft/lbs of energy with a 70# and 400 grain arrows
