Ethical dillema - what should I do?
This is our 2nd year hunting a particular 1/4 mile. The owner is a friend of distant family and we are still getting to know eachother. His Grandson visits the property often to fish and turkey hunt. Here is the problem. Last weekend we put up a tree stand in a new area of the property we hadn't scoped out much. While doing so we found wild pot. There's not a ton of it, but quite a bit. Appears to be growing wild (scattered about)but that doesn't mean it wasn't planted on purpose. My first reaction was to tell the owner. But then I thought...what if its the grandson's? I don't want to piss him off and then he fabricates some story about us andwe getkicked off the property. But then I thought, what if the owner finds it and suspects that we planted it there? Or what if its the owners? So, what should I do...? I'm leaning torwards telling him what we found but letting him know that what is on his property is his business and we won't interfere with it.

Call in the police.
The owner can't fabricate a story about you. If it is the grandson doing it without the grandparent's knowledge, they shouldn't get mad at you. You can always find new land if it turns out to be the owner's pot. |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
I'd talk to the landowner. Let him know what you found. I wouldn't assume anything. m2c

RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
I think I would definatly say something to the land owner. If its his then I would be finding somewhere else to hunt. Let the land owner deside what to do about it. But if its his then finding somewhere else to hunt is the best thing to do, in my opinion. I wouldnt think it would be his but who knows in this day and age. Good luck
P.S. Are you seeing the deer walking around stoned and with the munchies LOL. |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
I'd hunt over, deer love the stuff!!
Ok serious note I would tell the land owner |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
Yep tell the land owner without making any accusations. Not to sound like an "expert", but you can usually tell wild pot from planted pot. The planted marajuana will be bigger and have more seeds and buds on it. Now go out and find something to compare it with,HEHEHE [/align] |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
i would talk to the land owner and if any problems arise call the police

RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
When I was hunting with IMB one of their guides said he ran across the same thing on one of their properties in Nebraska. A new property they just picked up and hadnt been scouted. The best thing you can do is call the police.

RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
Wait for it to bud - and then smoke it!
Just kidding, I think I'd let the land owner know that you'd found it, and I wouldn't make any reference to his/her grandson. Who knows, maybe it belongs to a stranger who is making use of someone elses property? |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
Leave it alone as it is not on your land and keep tp your self as it could cause some serious relationship problems. Some of those guys who grow it setup booby traps so I would only monitor from afar and see what shows up. The Local Law uses trail cams and other survailance to catch growers here.
Or you could just take it home |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
Take it home!!!!!!:D
BTW, what's the ethical question? Should you let your friends know about your new stash?[8D] |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
I don't think I can just not say anything to anyone - if the owner finds it he might suspect we planted it there. If you know what it looks like its not hard to see it. I doubt its his, he is over 70 years old, so if it is his he probably uses it for health reasons and doesn't deal. He's pretty wealthy so I doubt he needs to sell it for money. I think we'll let him know we found it and reassure him that whatever is on his property is his business and we are just happy for the opportunity to hunt his land. I'm not just up and walking away from this hunting land. Its excellent deer land and its the ONLY piece of private land we have to deer hunt.

RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
Alright well where I am from in north central nebraska it grows wild and you see it all the time, I dont think I would worry about it its probly just wild stuff and no one has stumbled upon it yet, we always chop it down, or get it with the old mower tractor to try and get rid of it, boy will you have a head ache after that.

RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
Pick it, dry it, and keep it for yourself.:D
Im surprised the deer havent eaten it. If its a bother, id pull it up. If a person planted it, what are they going to do, confront you? |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
If the land is really good and you're worried about losing it over this dilema I'd move my stand and pretend I never saw it [8D][8D]:D:D.
If it's a dime a dozen type of piece then I'd tell the landowner. Chances are if it was his, he wouldn't grant you permission in the first place to hunt where he was growing pot. |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
I would be inclined to let the land owner know what you found. Without pointing fingers, and tell him that youjust wanted to make him aware, and that you would let him deal with it.

RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
PM me the address and I will make it go bye bye for you.... i'll be able to buy myself that new hoyt bow I always wanted!!!!!!!!!
my GRANDFATHER called me one day to come over and see what he had in the garden.... Turned out during turkey season a few years back he stumbled upon someone's pot garden in the woods. He actually took one of the plants home with half of it sticking out of the window going down the road!!!!!!!! He told my grandmother it was a nut tree LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is no joke. it grew to about 6' tall in the garden before my cousin cut it down and did whatever with it. but that is besides the point |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
I personally don't see where the dilemma part comes into play here.
There are 2 things here from where your decision should come from. 1) Is it right? (legal) 2) Is it wrong? (illegal) Too often people try to place shades of gray into the situation. If you saw it there I think it would be your responsibility to tell the landowner. He is allowing you to hunt his property and with that you have certain responsibilities to him for his kindness. You would be doing him a favor by letting him know about it. After all, when all is said and done........He is the one who is ultimately responsible for it being on his property.....guilty or not. Tell him regardless of how it is going to serve your interests. |
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
I would pull every plant up and leave it for dead and/or,I would burn it, but from what I've read that could have some adverse effects on you if your down wind
|
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
Play dumb, and HUNT period
|
RE: Ethical dillema - what should I do?
I doubt it's the property owners, if it were he wouldn't be letting you hunt there. I would tell him and offer to help him pull it and destroy, you would be looking out for him.......I would assume it's wild and wouldn't bother calling the cops (and I'm a cop), it's really not a big deal unless you think it's a grow operation.
