I choked.
Well it happened. I choked on my first shot at a deer this year. So let me set you up with the story. This past saturday was the opening day of bow season here in Alabama. Opening morning was slow and all I saw were squirells, chipmonks and a few birds. That same afternoon i decide to move stand locations to a known deer crossing. IT was a long afternoon, and finally, around 6:00 he makes himself known. When I say He, I mean the deer that I have been trying to hang on my wall for 5 years now. He has a 24 spread and 12 inch G2s. The wind was blowing from the north west and sure enough he came straight in from a spot I wasn't expecting. Needless to say he winded me and bolted. That was the highlight of that hunt.
The following afternoon I changed locations so that I would be on the opposite side due to the wind. Things were perfect except that my stand was facing in the wrond direction for which these deer came. I saw something cross a fence 80 yards from my location and then I heard a four wheeler crank and starting comin down property that joins mine. This causes deer to scatter. A yearling came directly under me while two big does ran west of my stand. After a few fawn bleats with my true talker grunt call the doe began to come towards me from behind my stand. She gave me a shot but I didn't want to take because she was quartered to me not away from me. So i passed on that shot. She began to walk behind my stand so i attempted to ease around when she saw me and blew. Even though she took off she stopped for a perfect broadside shot at what i thought was fifty yards. I drew back and put the pin right behind her back shoulder. The arrow sailed right over her back. I later went to retrieve my arrow when i noticed the distance wasn't 50 it was 40 yards. I was mad at myself all night. But all in all it was an exciting weekend of hunting. I guess thats why its called hunting not killing. |
RE: I choked.
Happens to the best of us, don't let it get you down.
