Will the rut start early because of weather?
Do you think the rut will start early this year due to weather? explain briefly on answer please
|
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
I dont think so just because every one says it every year (oo the rut will be early this year since its gettin colder) but its never till the 2nd week of nov.

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
I think that perhaps maybe for the bucks it might start the chasing and fighting a little sooner. And for the young bucks definatley , it seems that the first real cold spell with frost in october always gets the young guns going. Atleast that is how it is here in PA , it all depends though on your state and how the deer act. But i think the cold weather may get the bucks goin a week or so early , but no matter what , the does are on a cycle , so they wont be affected

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
The rut is dependant on the photoperiod, or the amount of light that reaches a deers eyes. It has nothing to do with the weather.
The rut will be pretty close to the same time as last year. |
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
Well the reason for asking is because my buddy shot a nice buck, and his neck has already began to swell, and rumor has it that the bucks over where I hunt are aready chasing does around. However, because the does have not began their "cycle" yet, i dont know, there are mixed feelings on this... ??? I dont know, just an interesting topic I think.

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
Campo I agree.
Now daylightobservations/evidence by us hunters..of deer rutting behavior can be swayed by weather conditions..simply put the photoperiod triggers doe estrus annually, weatherconditions on the other handgets them on their feet during daylight hours for us hunters to witness...many times do to poor hunting weather conditions, deer are rutting like crazy..just after dark... Does the MOON light affect the photoperiod (amount of light in a day) enough to pull the rut or trigger it ealier or later... Debate that until the end of time... Charlie A... does a lot of research on this.. |
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
Here in SC, I've already seen SOME rut activity. Also a buddy of mine killed a buck that was in rut.

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
Bucks are already starting to chase does in Wi. I saw 9 different bucks chasing different does monday nite.

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
no
|
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
i wouldn't say that the does will come in any earlier but the cool weather has got some dandys on the move. seen alot of scrapes and little bucks chasing here in ohio.
|
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
The does will stay close to the same cycle year after year ,for the fawns to be big enouth to ween before next fall they have to come in and get bred 1st two weeks or so of nov. Some states vary.,,two weeks after that last full moon in oct ..But some states have up to three ruts...Dont you know there bucks get run down. But the cool weather does make the young bucks feel there oats.
|
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
I have seen younger bucks harassing does as early as the first week of October. I have never seen a mature buck during this time frame though chasing. Usually I start to see that stuff during the 3rd-4th week of October

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
The rut is dependant on the photoperiod, or the amount of light that reaches a deers eyes. It has nothing to do with the weather. It's important not to confuse somerutting activity (scrapes, rubs, bucks chasing "cold" does) etc etc, with actual breeding activity. Just because a buck is chasing a doe around does not mean that he will "score" soon, or that the doe is in estrous. Yes bucks will chase does who are not in full estrous and this usually begins a few weeks prior to the peak breeding season. As a matter of fact, my findings have shown that this early season chasing of a buck on a doe slows down prior to actual breeding periods, when it will pick up again. Just my two cents!! |
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
Not to much earlier. Things other than temp will cause the rut. Amount of light is a big factor, but cool weather will help trigger it.
|
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
-deerslayer-..listen to campo..its all about the shortness of daylight.. Thats how its almost the identical time frames each season....weather..hot weather may lead to bucks chasin at nite...after all who likes it all sweaty and funky....Nothin stops the rut...........Meanwhile..bucks will spar and chase...thats all a prelude (pre rut)to the rut...part oflearning and instinctivebehaviors.......

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
i put no concern for the simple fact it has to happen at some time and that when i will whack one ;)

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
I have always seen and heard of bucks chassing does this time of yr butmost of the time it`s younger buckschassing! NOTBREEDING!
"Big difference"The rut happens about the the same time yr after yr "here around the 2nd week of nov- |
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
In my experience, the cold weather helps the deer move more, which in turn, more deer movement and/or rut activity is seen. But the technical term of "Rut" happens very close at the same time, every year.
But who cares, cold weather is always good!... Come on Saturday! |
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
Phototropism (sp) - when daylight timeis shorter than dark.
A doe's gestation period is 160 days. Count back 160 from the begining of spring. It can vary by a week or two either way but normally the rut kicks in near or around Nov. 10 in the Ohio valley. Bucks will continue to breed does every 30 days up till March providing the doe's have not been bred up to that point. Normally a small percentage of does will begin cycling near the 2rd week of Sept. The majority of the doe's coming into heat will be near or around the 2nd week of Nov. That is whatis called the peak rut. |
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
As has been stated...A bucks testosterone level raises due to the days being shorter...They start showing agressive behavior because of this....BUT...
A doe will not come into heat until a certain time period (about 5 months if my memory is correct) after dropping her fawns...This insures that she does not give birth too early in the spring, so they all have a good food supply.... So..."the rut"....Do you define it as soon as bucks start to show agressive behavior or... Only when a doe goes into heat and can concieve??? btw...a does or bucks rear hocks turn black when their hormones are "right"...After a doe has been bred and is pregnant...Hers turn back white....While a buck will move on to find another....I have seen does with black hocks as early as September, here in NC....And as late as January...this is when most of the doe fawns (this year's crop) get bred...They also have a higher % (I think its 60%) of buck fawns. |

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
Rut begins when the major percentage of the does come into heat.
Buck's testosterone level will rise as they go into hard rack. A buck will have the urge to breed any time of the year. The testosterone level dictates his potency. I've seen our bucks trying to "corn-hole" each other at various time of the year. When they get the urge, they'll try to mount each other if they can. The buck's tarsal glands darken because the buck piss's down his legs. A doe's hocks will darken as well while she comes into hear. She'll dribble and urinate frequently as well. It normally takes one day to come into heat, one day in heat, and one day going out of heat. RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
I'm not sure why people would think that the weather this year would cause an early rut. Its not like it has been any colder than in the past. I live in central IL. and yes it was cool last night and supposed to be about 30tonight. However, it was 90 degrees 3 days ago. It has by no means been unseasonably cold. However, like someone else said the rut is brought on by the amount of light that is present during the day.

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
Short answer - no.
Slightly longer answer - ..........because the rutting moon is in early November. |
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
From Ill I know you consider a nice buck to be?
I always see young deer running around this time of year. Hey if a doe came into estrus early you never know. |

ya, i saw a little buck chasin a doe earlier this week also. but that doesnt mean the rut will be any sooner.
|
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
I said yes......but I don't think it will get completly underway until the regular time. I have already seen and heard reports of bucks chasing does the first week of October this year.
A local archery shop and taxidermist have had people saying that they have seen bucks scraping, rubbing, and chasing does on cold nights. I saw a decent size (130 class) 8 point jump up and chase a doe around for about 5 minutes before making a scrape then running off. |
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
I should have reworded it to "will the bucks start chasing early because of eather" ... but this is why I posted this, because it really is a disputable topic...
|
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
If it's hot the does won't be moving much durring the day so you won't see as much buck activity. The rut is controled by the amount of daylight in a day which triggers a doe to go into heat. So I'm told.
|
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
They may be oot and aboot a little more to keep warm and feed, but the rut will be when it usually is.
|
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
NO NO NO NO NO NO
|
RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
Not ANY earlier. It has nothing to do with the temps. Sure, you may see more movement in cooler weather, but that has nothing to do with the rut.

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
I'm not sure about the question but I do know that they are definitly chasing here in PA. I saw a real nice buck chasing a doe while spotlighting this past week.

RE: Will the rut start early because of weather?
I believe the doe's come in by the shortness of daylight reguardless of temperture but you will see more rubbing and scraping activity after cold fronts move through.
