RE: Apples.....and how I think I messed up.....
I hunt in several place around Michigan and I bait. I've found that the deer in each area have a preference. I've also put out bait buffets before and found there is a definite sequence to which the deer in my area will eat the bait. Pumpkins, apples and carrotsare the last to go, in that order. The first out the door is sugar beets and corn.

Got to a local orchard if you have one and see if they have any rotton apples. normally they will give you a whole bin for free. Which is like i dont know how many bushels. probley at least over 12.
But there the apples that are not good enough to sell and still not good enough to go for cider apples. But trust me just go ask any orchard and see. Like i work on an orchard and we normally have a few bins ready to go. |

I've put out apples a bunch of times and they get ate up pretty good. No apple trees around. I always cut them up in cubes and they disappear pretty quick. I think I may try come carrots, too.

RE: Apples.....and how I think I messed up.....
Well i forgot to mention, but as im readin this you all should see this too,
Every one is saying they get ate up good WHITH NO APPLE TREES AROUND! I hunt in an apple orchard and there can be all kinds of apples on the ground and you will NEVER see a deer eat an apple. the only thing that eats an apple in the orchard are these MONSTER ground hogs. lol All the deer eat are the BUDS off the Trees. So i think if they are not use to the smell and taste of apples they will be there and eat them and you didnt mess anything up. |
RE: Apples.....and how I think I messed up.....
I am totally convinced it depends on the specific deer itself. I have proof from the hunt i was on just a few hrs ago. I set out 2 piles of pretty rotten apples, one to my right in the woods and one to my left in a small food plot. The food plot never came in real well and was mostly just weeds and various natural plants. The first deer that came in from the right at about 530pmhit the apples hard for a few minutes then left. Remember, these apples were put out only an hr and a half before, it was very windy, and cold, very cold, snowing at times. After this deer left, at about 620 pm i had 2 deer enter the food plot and feed not more than 15 yards from the apples, and they obviously smelled the apples, as the wind was swirling all around. They fed on some plants, then left. after hitting the can quite a few times to get them to come back, i had another deer stick its head out of the woods on the other side of the food plot, then it disappeared. so in the same 2 hr span, i had 1 deer eat the apples, 2 deer ignore the apples and eat the food plot, and1 deer ignore everything. hope this helps, but IMO i dont think u hurt the area at all by putting the apples out.
