RE: Lesson learned...bust terribly
I think there's some merit to the theory of taking a dominate doe in the early season the first chance you get. I thinkit will reduce your chances of getting busted later in the season or during the rut when a buck is full or hormones. An older hunter that was mentoring me told me a story about a dominate doe in an area he hunted a few season ago.....it was behind a houseing development and close to his house but hard to get in an out of. The first time he saw her he could have taken her but didn't, he said it would have been just too far to drag her out and he was buck hunting and didn't need a doe tag filled(I think he's just soft hearted), he'll never take does in that area.Anyway, the second time he saw her she winded him and he got busted......and he swore she had learned to look up. So for the rest of that season, evenwhen he was using a climber, and not a static hang-on, and even when the wind was right she would bust him......I think he said he got busted by her 5 or 6 times that season.....and he would cuss the fact he hadn't taken her.

RE: Lesson learned...bust terribly
Kellly,
good points.. fortunately here I hunt mostly out of conifer trees that don't change, they keep their needles all season. A few years back I got busted hardcore by the biggest nontypical I have seen to date. He must have blew at me for 5 minutes. Man did I feel about 1 inch tall! My set up was a ground blind ... I later after getting bustedput a stand in the same area, but never saw that buck again... Don't know what ever happened to that beast. Best of luck this season. I am sure you'll do well. Troy |
