I also live in NYS souther area. Ulster county to be exact. I grew up on apple farms and there is terrible poaching as well as the massive deer holocost driven by farmers and farmers friends during summer evenings. The kicker is most of these "apple" farms are now just resting places for new homes and the fruit is no longer picked, yet the farmers still shoot and let their buddies shoot at will. The NYS DEC does absolutely nothing about it. the deer in Campos trail cam is definitey a nice buck for southern NY especially in an apple orchard. Are there bigger bucks????? absolutely.. but you have to have a very special parcel of land in this area of the country to be blessed with that type of hunting. good luck campo and check your PM |
RE: Advice on how to hunt "my buck"
I would sit in the afternoon and try to find where he is coming from. If he isn't coming out till late then try to get where he will be earlier. Once the rut hits his patterns will be gone. As for a morning hunt I wouldn't worry about spooking the deer that are already out there. They don't know what spooked them. Get in as quiet and sent free as possible. But again once the rut hits all bets are off. I would probably hunt that area mid day during the rut. I have found that the small apple orchard that we have is a prime spot for mid day doe activity during the cold weather months. If there are does then he will follow.

RE: Advice on how to hunt "my buck"
Well said campo, But i wouldnt hunt that spot in the AM just because he most likely and others will already be in the field. I may have miss read and you might have already said you were gonna just hunt PM but if not, I would just the afternoon and get in there as early as yu can handle. But also dont go unless the winds is perfect, and dont over hunt it, like maybe mon, thursday, sat. or something like that.

RE: Advice on how to hunt "my buck"
I would only hunt him in the afternoon and make sure that you can get out of your stand without spooking other deer that may be feeding. That is the worst part about hunting in the morning is getting to your stand without getting busted. Typically the bigger deer are out of the fields and back to bed before first light. The best way to get him would be afternoon hunting by the apple tree(with the right wind) or wait until the rut and setup between two bedding areas. 200 yards is still a lot of ground to cover before dark. If you can get closer to his bed without spooking him, do so. He will be up around sunset to go feed but is taking his sweet time getting there. Another thing would be to back off and glass the place for a bit. When you notice a real change in the weather, get into your stand early afternoon and see if the front gets him feeding early. I have seen some nice bucks mid-day right before a front change or storms coming through....good luck!

RE: Advice on how to hunt "my buck"
Don't wait until the rut! At that time he may be chasing does and not interested in this apple food source. An evening hunt would be great. Sneaking in early is ok if you scare some does around they'll probably settle down within the hour, however unless you know he's not there when you come in you could be scaring him away! I hate early morning for thatreason, you never know what you've scared away!

RE: Advice on how to hunt "my buck"
Alright, I say that you hunt that orchard first part of the season a couple of times switch it up between morning and afternoon. Approach the stand from a way in the morning that you wont bump any deer out of the field circle around the backside through the woods. Also use a green flashlight if you need one at all. Deer cant see the green light. I think that after the first few weeks chances at this particular buck will greatly deminish as bucks enter the dispersal time period. They travel great distances at night and if you are hunting this buck and this buck only then you might only catch him again during the rut. Hunt the orchard though.
