The Can, too early?
In Central MO, going out hunting for the first time this season tonight
Going in a different spot, don't know what I'll see, but was wondering if it's too early to use the can. |
RE: The Can, too early?
The rut hasn't kicked in here yet in Southern Indiana , they aren't even chasing yet , so I'd say no . So far social grunts have been working for me , I'll switch to bleats in a few weeks .

RE: The Can, too early?
The can is nothing more than a contact call and can be used the first day to the last day. Why do we think does and fawns will run to the call on occassion, it's a social contact call that says "I am here, I'm lost, I'm lonely, come to me" hypothetically speaking of course.
No it's not to early for a contact call. |
RE: The Can, too early?
Rob is that every can or which one isnt there like 3 different ones? I know they are lil can, original can, and that huge thing which one would you recommend for ohio this time of the year?

RE: The Can, too early?
I didn't know you spoke deer Rob! I was bleating last night, on my grunt tube, not the can,but I had two does come by to check it out and mybrother has also seen three deer come in to his can this year. He uses the biggest one. I use the Primos Hardwoods Grunter and it has a doe bleat setting that sounds just like the can.

RE: The Can, too early?
i also have the primos hands free grunter with the doe bleat and estrus bleat i guess i should just use the regular bleat right.

RE: The Can, too early?
I am in IL not far from St. Louis area and I had some does come running to the the can this weekend.. I used it three times in a rowand had does running right at me after a few minutes.. Dumb Luck?? I dunno, but I stuck one anyway. :D
Oh, and I heard a buck and doe making faint grunting sounds this weekend also, used my grunt very softly and had them come right in.. Stuck that one also.. lol Two deer this weekend and I used the calls. I wouldn't say it too early but you can't use them very aggressive. |

ORIGINAL: buckeye hunter 5 Rob is that every can or which one isnt there like 3 different ones? I know they are lil can, original can, and that huge thing which one would you recommend for ohio this time of the year? Anyway, I hope that site helps and I've used the "contact""estrous" call from the begining of the season and to the end mixed with buck grunts with great success. Deer are very vocal and communicate. Just Saturday evening I had a button buck at 200 yards. I "contact" called, he threw his head up and headed my way only to stop, a second bleat from my River Valley Deer Flute and he threw his tail up and ran full speed to the base of my tree (20 yards) he was mewing and bleating his little dear head off..lol Poor little guy. |
RE: The Can, too early?
Rob, the Primos "Can" call is a doe in estrus call. It mimics the sound of a doe in heat (estrus) and should be used only during the rutting period. It says it can be used during all phases of the rut.
If used during the wrong time of the year a buck knows something isnot right, and willbe easily spooked. Do you find this not accurate? The differant sizes are for more volume. |
RE: The Can, too early?
I called in 2 bucks this year with the can. Neither were shooters, but average bucks for around here.
They really committed when they heard the doe I had just shot kicking around about 50 yards just below me! We have the worse rut in the States here in SC though. Where else can you shoot more bucks than does!!! |
RE: The Can, too early?
early in, again yes, I find that inaccurate. Not so much using a wrong call at the wrong time but if you play your "can" against the site I provided the "can" sounds more like the contact call than what's suppose to be an estrous bleat. It's labeled an estrous bleat but it doesn't produce an estrous bleat...if an estrous bleat exists as such. Nothing I can find in writing suggest that and if someone does I appreciate the link, provided it's a reputable link rather than someone selling a product. I've never seen scientific research telling us that does will call like that when in heat/estrous. I suppose some pen deer somewhere made it. Anyway, again, the "can" call, even when mimic'd sounds like a contact call and is usable throughout the season.
I'd imagine when you make that call during the rut, a heated buck will come to it because it's a doe...hey when your heated and you hear a female say "hey you" you come running right. ;) |
RE: The Can, too early?
Rob, the first time I actually heard a doe make that EXACT sound that the "Can" duplicates was four years ago. This was during the heat of the rut and a buck was right on her heels!I mean the sound that the "Can" makes is EXACTLY the sound that doe made. I couldn't believe it.
Like alot of subjects, this one could go round and round. But I've stated what "I've" heard and what "I" believe.:) |
RE: The Can, too early?
And I won't doubt you a bit ei, but was it an "estrous" bleat? I've never seen a deer, buck or doe spook using it early or late. I know it works, at times and like other calling, I've never seen a negative response using calls, grunts or bleats. Very effective.
Keep doing what your doing. |
