Ladder stand?

Has anybody ever bowhunted out of a 10 - 12 foot ladder stand? I found a good deer trail crossing a dirt road, but the trees are too small for my climber and I dont care for ground blinds I like to be off the ground a lil bit. Any feedback or comments greatly appreciated...

I have made a few before, it would be easier to buy a hang on, but a good homemade stand could do the trick, I have killed a few deer off of mine...

depending on the area, a 12' ladder stand would be fine. I've hunted out of stands that were 12' and had deer directly below me.

I figure as long as I am down wind and pretty well concealed I will be alright..

I've hunted out of them on several occasions with success. They key is like hunting out of any other stand; down wind, concealment and a little bit of luck...

Thats all I use. I feel safer climbing up and down that ladder in the worst conditions. Large platform to move around on. My choice.

it is a homemade ladder stand, I used sassafrass poles i cut in the woods and am using 1x4's for the step with a piece of 3/4 inch ply wood at the top. i have it set up so i can drag it in and out..If it were taller it wouldnt work cause the trees are kind small. I hope I can get it set up good and the wind will aloow me to hunt..

I've used them before. You can have success with them, but good concealment is always a factor

I have shot many a deer out of homemade ladder stands. You should be just fine.

I use them a bunch here in VA. I prefer the 16' stands, but the 12' work pretty well also. The Wally World by me has a 12' double ladder stand on sale right now for $98. Great Buy!

If you have cover 12 ft is plenty. I havehunted and killed deer out of a 12ft stand a few times.

I prefer the 16ft ladder stand over the 12ft, but have had success in both.

yeah I just hope I get lucky and get a shot... Alsong as i am down wind and sit still I shouldnt have any reason to worry..

Just make sure you have some type of foilage, low hanging limbsor something to break up you outline.

Don't just put it up against a bare tree trunk out in the open.

You want to blend in, not stick out. Also, follow other's advise about playing the wind.

If there isn't much to conceal you at that height you might be better off in a well camaflaged ground blind. But if you can hide among branches and leaves and get the wind right lt can be done.

RE: Ladder stand?

you can always add branches behind you to help hide you.
I use an extra ratchet strap and just ratchet the extra branches to the tree.
Works like a charm.
Dick's had 15 ft ladders on sale for 59.00 last week
I may go get a few more this week. You can never have too many stands.:D

where I am hunting the pine trees are young and barely big enough for a ladder, but I think the branches will offer adequate cover... I hope so man.. man I cant wait to go hunting this evening...

If the trees are that small, have you considered a tripod stand? Many of them will help you get well above the 10-12' you'll get from your ladder stand.

I am not going to have time to go buy a tripod for this weekend, but I wish i had one.. Also it is onWMA and i have to take it down at night. Also if somebody steals my lil ladder stand it wont be near as bad as them stealing a new tripod.. thanks for the advice though...

Be careful. That ladder sounds weak at best. The 3/4 plywood is fine, but I use 2x4's for the legs and steps. 12 ft 2 x4's are only about $4 here. It should be light, but I'd worry about the strength of the ladder.

RE: Ladder stand?

It is stronger than 2x4's I guarantee it, They are probably as big around as 4x4's but are really light...

No it's not. Strong and light don't belong in the same sentence when talking about wood. Take a live sassafrass(sp?)limb and a live pine limb, see which one you can break in your hand the easiest. Sassafrass makes a good tea, but a poor choice for a ladder IMO.

well i have made plenty of them to know that they do, so regardless what you say I am still going to use it cause i know from experience it will work. I am not talking about limbs either..

I use a ladder stand for most of my hunting. They are home made and are about 15 feet tall.

RE: Ladder stand?

I like them more than hang ons just because I feel more safe. Not a big fan of heights. I think they are also easier to put up. Also I keep mine up year round and the deer dont seem to mind them at all. Just watch your scent and your movement and youll be fine.
