How Long Prior to Opener do You Set Stands?
 

I have been cleaning up some shooting lanes in areas that I use my climber and am setting out about 4 hang-on's this year as well.

Just curious how long before opener you have your stands set.

i dont set stands, i always use my climber every spot i have got picked out, but if im gonna clean out some shooting lanes i would try to doit about 2 weeks before season

3-6 weeks.
Otherwise, my neighbors realize my stands and follow me to my honeyholes.;)

Well, our seasons opens this coming Saturday and I hung stands 4 weeks ago.

Season started the 16th and I am yet to hang a stand. I hunt out of a ground blind until late October to keep both scent and pressure down. This allows me to scout and pick a spot to hunt during the rut.

IL bow season starts this Sunday, and my stands were hung 4 weeks ago.

I usually like to be done before now but I just finished hanging 5 additional stands and put in 2 ground blinds this weekend for next weekends opener. I already had 5 stands in place as well as about 5 trees that are trimmed for the climber.

I always have my stands and a makeshift ground blind set up a month before opening day.

I just hung the last one yesterday (Sept24) and season starts on 30th. The early season is super slow and sometimes I will even trim lanes and such on the first day if it is too warm. My Dad doesn't even really hunt much until about two weeks into the season. I wish they would start the season two weeks later. In my youth I have hung a stand in the morning darkness the day of a hunt. My Dad used to carry his Griz ladder in for every hunt. That was work!

I would "think" that it wouldn't make that big of a difference, but I'm still kinda new to all of this. There are guys who kill deer ALL THE TIME from stands they climbed up a tree in THAT DAY. I try not to be careless.....but I'm not over the top, either. I had my stands set 2-3 weeks prior to the season......but I went, just yesterday, and hung one more. Clarification, though......I knew it was raining when I went in there.....and I knew it would likely wash my scent out. I wasn't disappointed. We got a gulley washer, last night.

Our season comes in Mid Oct. and I typically like to get all of mine up by mid Sept...one month early. This year however I am a little behind schedule because I am hanging more stands. I have 2 up and ready to go, but I have 2-3 more that I need to hang.Hopefuly, Iwill het everything done this coming weekend.

Here in Pa our opener is always when the Saturday falls end of Sept or beginning of Oct. I always try to have all of my stands hung and trails cleared by the end of August and no later than Labor Day weekend.

On my property I just set stands up this weekend and season starts in two weeks. I will set up more over the next week and as the season progresses. I usually start low on the mountain and then work my way up as the season progresses. I don't cut lanes. I may take a branch out here or there but I usually try to minimize impact. At another area I hunt my friend used to cut shooting lanes in the thick stuff but we found that the deer were going around the lanes. Now he either zig-zags the lanes so they justlook like small openings to deer crossing them, or use none at all. I also often just move to trees for a single hunt when I need to change strategies or hunting a new area or one I don't go to often. Again, no shooting lanes.

I only have one chain on and one climber, I hung the chain on during the last day of gun season last year for meto bow hunt this year and left it there all summer. I recently went back and trimmed some brush1 week ago, (2 weeks prior) boy was I glad to see it still there after all summerand I will hang my climber the day before(this sat pm)so I dont have to bang around in the dark trying to get it on the tree sunday morning and its alot easier to steal a climber. I dont know if its a waste of my time or not but after I hang the climber I usually take a spray bottle of scent blocker or cover scent and spray the climber and surrounding area just in case a deer comes to check it out over night.

Usually a good month to 6 weeks prior.However i put another one up yesterday.This is only a week prior to the season opener. I never hang them this late but it was a ladder stand that I didn't really have a spot for. So in thinking about it Saturday, i thought well it isn't going to do any good in the garage, so I put it up yesterday.

I put it in an area that I won't hunt until the rut starts kicking and the leaves are falling.

I usually leave them up all year around, year after year. I make sure to test them out, prior to season though. Any new stands that I put up, are usually put up 2-3 months prior to season.
