early season calling
our season starts oct. 1st here in oklahoma - what type of calling (if any) would you guys suggest that early on?? any scents?? thanks in advance!!

RE: early season calling
I pretty much only carry a grunt tube in the early season. Mainly as a social call. Seems to be the only thing that works for me until the rut.
|
RE: early season calling
Contact and social calls, that means grunts, bleats and contact call which the "can" imitates.
|
RE: early season calling
Ours starts the same day as yours. I use no calls in the early season. I just want to be as scent free as possible and see what the deer are doing. Save the calling for when the bucks get aggressive.

RE: early season calling
If I use any calling it would be a doe bleat or a contact gunt with my Tru Talker and when it comes to sents I might use Trails End 307 by Wlid Life Research on a drag rag.

RE: early season calling
I'm in OK as well hawg. I use the can quite frequently and have had pretty good results, I usually get to whack a yote at some point as well. And it called in a bobcat 2 seasons ago.

RE: early season calling
I may be in the minority, but I'll take my rattling antlers and just tickle them a little, no bashing like rut time, but it seems to draw some interest. I don't bother w/ scents at all. I do use a grunt tube a little also, but not much of either.

RE: early season calling
well my season opens saturday and i'm going to put out just regular doe urine and i'm going to try a fawn distress call.
|
RE: early season calling
I use a soft contact call (grunt) about every half hour while in stand during the first couple weeks of the season. Does it work? I really don't know, but I do regularly see more deer than my counterparts do in the same woodlots.
I am a long time largemouth bass fisherman, and if I want to catch the fish I have to use a lure. It just seems pointless to sit in the woods and wait for deer to come to you. |
RE: early season calling
Question (related), rather than an answer: I've always heard that bucks are already in Rut, starting September (I've even heard earlier), and they're just waiting for the does to "come around". If that's so, wouldn't a buck go nuts if he smelled estrous doe pee and track in down, if he smelled it before any of the does in the area were in estrous?

RE: early season calling
i don't know the answer to that. last year i did do a little experiment. i put out some #69 in very early season down in Ga. at dusk, at first 2 nice bucks came in, and a few minutes later a 3rd. they sort of congregated around the lure, but were not at all aggressive w/ eachother. i couldn't count points and i was in a 'at least 4 on 1 side county'. i say not at all aggressive, but there was a tiny show when the last one showed. i think he ruled that roost as the other 2 seemed to get a bit nervous about him, but there was no show of dominance i could pick out. i put it on their trail to the lake, not far from the edge - so they could have just been coming for water as they didn't stick their noses on the wick, but they did hang around just by it - so long that my buddy had to scare them off w/ the boat for me to get down.

RE: early season calling
I've been told the estrous scent would repel the does and they would leave the area. If the bucks are following them then they would leave also. Non-estrous does do not like to hang around with estrous does. Even though the buck is technically ready, not all of the pieces of the puzzle are in place yet. There hasn't been enough chasing scraping and fighting, he may feel something is wrong. This year I'm going to use vanilla as this is supposed to keep the does hanging around.

RE: early season calling
I like to use a grunt call...especially the true talker by H.S. I have really good luck with this call in the past...
|
RE: early season calling
Only scents I use would be cover scents to try and disguiseany human odor. I also use the White Oak Acorn scent wafers when hunting my stands around oak trees. I will also use my true talker occasionally if things are slow!

RE: early season calling
I carry a grunt tube but hardly use it at all during the early bow season. I used it a couple years ago after missing a dandy9 ptr. Arrow went over his back and he ran off. I dug out the grunt tube and gave a couple short soft grunts...he came back to investigate and I sealed the deal on the second arrow.

RE: early season calling
I use a grunt tube and I also tickle the antlers a little. Nothing big just make it sound like a couple of small bucks messing around.
