My second 8pt of the season!!!! (pics)

Hey Guys,

I picked out this stand in March during one of my many winter scouts. I would not go near this stand until I felt the Rut was hot. It’s located on a small ridge between to thick, thick bedding areas. The stand itself was in very thick scrub oak and pine, with a few impressive rub lines running between both beds.

At 1 hour after sunrise, a very nervous doe began making a scrape 20 yds from me. She bolted and he came strutting out of the thickets. Drew the bow, put the pin on him at 25 yds and he stopped. There were a couple leaves between us so I chose to hold off. If would make three more steps he would enter one of my lanes for a slam dunk 20 yder. Well as usual he took another route and began chasing the doe down the ridge. I was questioning myself for not taking the shot, I did have a decent window through the leaves, when he started back up the ridge again. He hit the doe’s scrape and attacked one of his rubs, then stood 25 yds and quartering away. I drew back again and settled, and let her go. He took two jumps and just walked away. The shot looked good but he just casually walked away. I stayed in my stand for another hour, and after convincing myself I missed went to retrieve my arrow.

To make a long story short, I hit to far back and left the woods to return with my dad at 1:00. After 4 hours of hands and knees blood trailing a almost non existent blood trail I heard a deer jump up and bolt. We went to the spot and found fresh blood in a bed. So we backed out again and waited the night out to begin early Sunday mourning. After 3 more hours of frustrating, tracking We found him. What a feeling!!!!!!

He dressed out at 175 lbs and has a neck the size of a horse, some nice mass also.

I am not happy with the shot placement, but proud of our tracking job and soooooo glad I found him.

I am having problems with Hunting-Pics.com - Can someone help post pics.

Congrats, Rack. Very unusual set of head-bones on that guy. Looks as though his mother may have been dating an antelope.

Many kudos on the tracking!

Thanks for all the congrats guys!!!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I decided to get him mounted, more for the fact that my Pops was so involved in its recovery, and drag back(two hours worth), than his size. Its funny, as I get older, having him there with me in the woods is far greater than any set of horns I have put to the ground.

Thanks again and thanks Pop!!!

P.S. Jersey, Passing each other by on the L.I. Expressway. You got a stand ready for me:)<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Rack-Attack-

Great deer! When I pulled up the pictures and saw the background I thought it looked like Long Island. If this is on the North Fork, I think I may be hunting pretty close to you. My buddy took a real nice 8 last weekend out in the Jamesport area. What town did you shoot him in?

Great job of recovering that deer.

Flip,

I got him on the north shore but a little west of you in Wading River. I also hunt speonk, south Hampton, shorem and Manorvile.
The picture was taken at my parents house on the south shore - Moriches.

Good luck.

You don't by chance have a sister that works in a deli in Moriches do you?

Rack-attack 11-13-2002 10:40 AM

RE: My second 8pt of the season!!!! (pics)

Why? I hope the girl in the Deli doesn't look like me <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> LOL..

Nope, only child.

Actually, similar features and she is always talking about her brother who bowhunts. He just shot a nice buck last week and I figured I'd take a shot. (oh well)

I used to keep my boat in Moriches down at the end of Atlantic Ave. (Windswept Marina) now I trailer and launch from there. I live in Manorville.

Maybe I'll bump into you someday.

Good luck.

The choice is your's rack. You ever get to Fire Island to hunt? or is that off limits?

RE: My second 8pt of the season!!!! (pics)

Nice buck. What bow shop do go to on the Island? Are you going to get it mounted? I have a friend in Calverton (Panamoka) who has a bow/taxidermy shop.

Rack-attack 11-13-2002 12:43 PM

RE: My second 8pt of the season!!!! (pics)

Ahhh - Fire Island - the only place in the world where 100 lb bucks carry 170 class headgear..LOL.

Off limits Jersey, They had a limited hunt there a few years back but the rich hamptonites ended that real quick. They have no problem feeding them all summer, leaving in the fall to go back to there NY city penthouse and letting them all starve over the winter.

Shedhead - I have always used Eastern Taxidermy for my mounts. Frank, from Island-Wide Taxidermy has this one. I met him over the summer and liked him and his work so I am giving him a try. Thanks for the offer though.
