RE: What deer would you pass up!
There is no way to know by the points. I've saw huge 7 Points and small 10 Points. It just depends on How mature the deer is and theFrame of theRack. Not justhow many points he has.
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
same as hoyt said but i go by either a huge 7 or better
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
I would like the deer to be at lease 100 inches to make it a shooter
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
I guess it depends on how you classify your deer.
I picked three point. As in three points on one side. I would pass a 3x3 unless it was wide, tall, and had good mass. Washington state has a three point minimum, but I've set the standard myself for only taking 4x4's or better. Probably why I've yet to shoot a buck. |
RE: What deer would you pass up!
I agree with hoyt, I have seen some really massive 6 pointers. I have two twin( I think they are twins) 4 pointers behind my house and they have more mass than 80 percent of the deer I have seen. I would not shoot one either. I always try to think that next year they might be monsters or the year after.

RE: What deer would you pass up!
I have fewer options. Arkansas has a three point rule (three points on one side) throughout the state and up to five points in certain management areas. So, if it is a legal buck, I ain't passing it up! Besides, I've yet to find a decent recipe for antlers.:D

RE: What deer would you pass up!
I didn't vote. I've passed up all of the above and some. One I do regret now looking back was a 14 point. I was a great moring in a place we call buck run. I had some nice 8's around all morning long with a half a dozen smaller bucks. The 14 point walked right by with in about 10 yrds. I didn't shoot him because of his rack. The left was huge the right was only about 2/3 of the left. So I let him walk. It was easy to do because I had a huge 10 point about 150 yrds away all morning just running up and down the golf course about 10 yrds in the woods. He never did come down to where I was. It was still a great morning.

RE: What deer would you pass up!
Six points and less I'd say let'em live and grow some more bone to that rack.
Eight points or more , yea you bet I'm taking a shot at that. |
RE: What deer would you pass up!
If it's legal I'll take it. Depending on the area I'm hunting the buck has to have either 3 or 4 points on a single side to make him legal. Unless he's a button buck.

RE: What deer would you pass up!
I didn't vote because I don't let anything pass..........the only time I pass is when my tags are full.
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
To many variables to even think about voting. Im either shooting dinner which would be a yearling doe or a 130+ class buck. I wont shoot fawns or small bucks but thats just me.
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
i take deer to use as food .what i have found is that them old big bucks taste terrible.give me a doe any day.
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
Points don't mean anything to me. It is a combination of overall weight of the deer, the spread of the antlers, the thickness of the antlers, ageand timing. Have I shot anything this year? Do I have only one buck tag? Is it opening day?
Too many variables. I have passed up spikes to 11 pointers. I manage deer...I don't shoot the first thing that comes my way. |
RE: What deer would you pass up!
Impossible to answer. It depends on the situation. If I've hunted hard all season, and I haven't seen many deer, and I haven't filled my tags, then "brown it's down".
If it's the first week of the season and I'm seeing lots of deer, I'll wait for a 8 point or bigger (or a mature doe). I'd rather not shoot young bucks. |
RE: What deer would you pass up!
Okie....how do you get those deer to stand still for you while you get down and measure for the 100 inches? [8D]
I passed on a spike last night, but he had two does following him which I would have gladly taken had they not been spooked by two tree rats playing tag in a tree just above the deer. |
RE: What deer would you pass up!
The only deer I pass up are bambi's with spots!
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
I saw a nice 8 pt last year and let him pass because I knew there were too many big deer out there. If i want meat i just shoot a doe. I'm looking for atrophybuck.

RE: What deer would you pass up!
"I will pass up anybuck I will not put on my wall. If I shoot it I mount it."
I wish more hunters had this philosophy. Too many shoot dink bucks year after year after year only to saw them off and throw them in a pile in the corner of the garage or let the dog chew them up. If he aint big enough to put on your wall then let him go and shoot a doe. We need to do a better job of managing our deer herds and shooting a doe instead of a dink buck is a great start. That doesnt mean that nobody can shoot a little buck, if a beginner shoots one and mounts it then that is fine but at some point we all need to mature as hunters. By the way, the number of points is a VERY poor way to determine which bucks you will pass. |
RE: What deer would you pass up!
if it has antler(s) i'll shoot it!
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
I have killed a lot of deer in my life (just not many with a bow) and I know for sure that I would pass up any buck that did not score at least 120 unless it is a management buck. I would rather shoot does for meet and give the smaller bucks an opportunity to get bigger.

RE: What deer would you pass up!
I don't pass on anything. I take what ever comes my way. This season I'm a meat hunter due to lack of time to hunt.
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
ill take any deer....antlers are nice but I hunt for the meat:D
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
points shouldnt judge the quality
|
RE: What deer would you pass up!
The point count is secondary tomaturity and overall size of the rack. I'd pass a 100" 10 pointeron the last day but a 140" mature 8 pointer is gettin the blade!
