You should be proud--good buck! Isn't that buckrather small for a mule deer and the size of his rack? That's no criticism, as I only have been exposed to them via video--I live in Ga--and most I see are larger than whitetails. I am just asking from your perspective, since I have no first hand experience.

You are correct, that is not a super-big mulie as they go. It's still a shooter in my book!

manuman.... this buck and the 8 point I got last year were rather small bodied mule deer with nice racks. This deer weighed 158 lbs. field dressed
and the one last year was about that. Four years ago I got a 6 point (gun)that weighed 250. The weather pattern in NM may be contributing to the light weight....drought conditions until the monsoon in mid July, deer start getting in shape just in time for the harsh winter. I heard a report that antler growth was hurt in NM this year due to the severe conditions during the first half of the year. I saw several deer that had funky looking horns like maybe that was the case. But I also saw some good horns, like the 10 pt. I got and the 12 pt. I missed @!*#@? Long story.....it was getting too dark, he showed up as I was getting ready to get down, took a shot I shouldn't have.....lots of sparks when the Slick Trick hit the rock on the ground. Next day saw why.....shot through the top of a juniper I didn't see because of the DARKNESS. Lesson learned.
Anyway, this buck was in better shape than most deer in the area. The does really looked poor probably because they were having fawns during some really hard times....lots of ribs still showing. Hopefully the area will get the winter snows and spring rains it has been missing.Hope this answers your question. Ray

rockymountain_hunter .........I hunt on private land (relatives) so I don't participate in the public land draw. I did hunt the state land around Unit 36 several years ago. Over the past 8 or 9 years I've noticed fewer andfewer hunters around the gas stations, motels, restaurants, casino, etc. I'd have to think the deer numbers will increase and perhaps the quality.....but I have to believe the state is really taking a beating on lost revenues due to fewer hunters. I'm curious how locals feel about this.....?
