Expandable terminal performance
I'm pretty darn pleased with my broadhead performance on my recent reindeer hunt; the arrow went clean through my bull like it wasn't even there. At 39 yards it broke a rib clean in two on entry and came out behind the far shoulder. Then the arrow went another 15 feet and buried half its length in the tundra. This is only the second animal I've taken with expandable broadheads but it definitely won't be the last. I may even shoot another animal or two with that same arrow and head!

RE: Expandable terminal performance
I shoot a 460 grain arrow at 266 fps for 72 ft-lbs of KE. I was considering using a 125 grain spitfire this year on deer but I was too nervous about the blades breaking. Your story makes me want to try thespitfires on deer.

RE: Expandable terminal performance
I only ask that you change the blades. I shot my bull elk and then a buck and a doe with the same arrow and head several years ago. A Beman Trophy Hunter 70/90 with a Muzzy 100 grain 3 blade. I did replace the blades each and every time. I had a second doe tag but the Muzzy bent at the second deer/doe.
Once shot, a broadhead is ruined for hunting unless the blades are replaced or sharpened. PERIOD. |

RE: Expandable terminal performance
There isn't a man on this planet that can convince me to use anything but expandables with my rig. Sadly, game laws will keep me from using them in some states. Kodiak, Congrats on a fine bou!

RE: Expandable terminal performance
I, too, am very fond of expandables when shot out of a well-tuned rig. I took 26 straight deer with them, and have been bitten by the tinkering bug a bit here of late... With the advent of these new "shorty" fixed blades, I'm going to try some of them; I'll be shooting Slick Tricks this year if they arrive in time. I will however miss the huge swath the expandables cut, I'm sure.
