Opening Day Success...
I am curious how many people have Success on Opening Day of Archery Season... I have never taken a buck on Opening Day... But I really don't hunt any fields or anything... So I think that makes it a little harder in the early season... One thing is for sure... I'll be in my Tree...:D
Any pics of Opening Day Bucks...??? Good Luck, and Be Safe... |

RE: Opening Day Success...
Opening day is not real productive for me. Still real hot around here. I have taken a few does on opening day. I always tag two nannys before I pop a buck.
This was opening day last year. Two doe and a hog. First doe, I had to quarter in the field and get on Ice. It was 98 degrees. This doe was the last. I shot my first about 9:00am and while waiting my standard 30 min. I came across another. I poped her. The hog was taken while going back to my truck so I could pick up the deer. I saw them in the distance and put on a little stalk and poped a medium sized sow. She was great at the bbq. ![]() ![]() This guy was taken that evening. He decided to sun under my tree stand. ![]() |
RE: Opening Day Success...
I shot my first buck with a bow on opening day. I also have shot quite a few does on opening day as well.

RE: Opening Day Success...
There was one season, back in 1997, I killed a spike on opening day and killed a nine point the next day that scored 106. That is the only buck I have killed on opening day of bow season. I have killed a few does on opening day. Different story with a gun though. The bucks don't move too well early down here. This is why I try to kill two does during early Oct.

RE: Opening Day Success...
Ihave yet to see a shooter opening day.
|
RE: Opening Day Success...
In the past I've usually only had one tag so I wouldn't shoot anything opening day unless it was big...to me it sucks when you've been waiting all year for deer season and end it in one day, but I picked up two tags this year so we'll see what happens...

RE: Opening Day Success...
Opening day 2 years ago.....Settled into stand at 4:30.....shot doe at 5:15.....One of the best days, if you can fight the heat.

RE: Opening Day Success...
I've taken a doe a couple times on opening day...but never a buck. Two years ago the first deer to walk by on opening day was a small/decent 6pt but I let him walk. And a year or so before that I saw two really nice bucks on opening day late in the evening but never got the opportunity for a shot. That's the closest I've come to taking a buck on opening day.
Now opening day of rifle season.....that's another story.....[&:] |

RE: Opening Day Success...
3 years ago I shot a doe after being in the stand for only an hour on the opening afternoon. I rushed home from college, got to my stand at 4. Had a doe on the ground at 5. One of my most memorable hunts ever.

RE: Opening Day Success...
Opening day last year.........set myself up first thing in the morning in a spot I had scouted all summer only to be literally almost shot out of my tree by pheasant hunters. Such is life on public land.
Went to a private farm I have permission at for the afternoon and shot this guy at 6:00pm........dragged him out under one of the brightest full moons I can remember. Weird day. ![]() |
RE: Opening Day Success...

Something does look very strange with windwalkers first buck, hmm. I'm not saying it is fake but the picture just doesn't look quite right.

ORIGINAL: Cougars09 wind walker not saying it isnt but in that first buck looks fake but as i said i dont mean its not My father made a deer hauler type contraption for me out of some piping and a bicycle wheel. The buck is tied to the contraption. That is why the rear end is raised in the air. The thing did not work very well. It was kinda like a wheelbarrow without the tub. I wheeled my deer over to where my buddy was hunting and he had a doe. We took a photo with the deer and mine still on the homemade deer hauler. If you look closely, in the grass by the deer's nose, you can see some of the handle for the cart. You can also see where the ropes are around the neck and across the gut before the hindquarter. This is the same buck just a picture of it where I found it. |
RE: Opening Day Success...
On the 1974 New York opener I shot my first buck, at first light, the first day I ever hunted! I thought "this is a piece of cake". Boy, was I mistaken!

RE: Opening Day Success...
Opening day eight years ago shot a real nice eight pointer about ten min. after getting into stand. Was great at first, but at that time ohio was only one tag, buck or doe so I had ruined the rest of my season!

RE: Opening Day Success...
Shot my PA 6 point within the first 2 hrs of opening day and recovered him within the first 4 hours (waited and hour and a half). Hit him right in front of the sholder angling toward me. penitrated 8 inches and he didnt even make it 15 yards. that was one of the best hunts of my life. heres some pix

RE: Opening Day Success...
Although opening day has not been very successful for myself, the first ten days of every season have been. I look forward to October 1-10, just as much as the November rut!
