RE: Top 20 Tips For bagging that big buck
ORIGINAL: GR8atta2d Tip #5 may work..but I'm not obstructing any gun barrel with anything, and would advise anyone else, against it. |
RE: Top 20 Tips For bagging that big buck
#5 does work, blowby from around the projectile and the piston effect of the moving projectile blows the tape off the end of the barrel long before the bullet ever gets there, and at any rate tape on the outside is not the same thing as a barrel obstruction on the inside that physically slows down or stops the bullet creating a pressure spike. It is safe and can be done even on a high velocity rifle as long as you are not putting a glob of duct tape the size of you fist on there...

Alot of really good advice here. I am impressed. #6 I dont buy though. Human odor, unless there is a strong wind, sinks to the ground, then disperses. If there is a good breeze, then you are the mercy of the surface air currents, which can start high then come very close to the ground.
If you are a golfer, you know this, cause you can see that flagstick waving, and yet there isnt a drop of wind where you are. Still, great advice here!:) |
RE: Top 20 Tips For bagging that big buck
killing big deer is not rocket science!!!!!!! It all comes down to mathmatics!! the biggest think is to hunt in the best trophy area you can find or travel to. Then plan on hunting as much as you can in those area, because you not going to kill big deer spending a couple of hours in the stand a season!!!!!!! no matter where you hunt. next when you get that buck in range make sure you make your shot count!!! For most of us its only going to happen once or so a year if were lucky!!!!!!!!You can use all the other things mentioned if it makes you more confident but stick to these 3 things and you will have more trophy bucks on your wall!!!!!

some great tips

RE: Top 20 Tips For bagging that big buck
I'd add some things that may be obvious, maybe even redundant, but herethey are:
Know your hunting area: There is an hierarchy of food preferences for deer. And this hierarchy changes with the seasons, at least in most places. Adapt your hunting strategybased onthe food source(s) that are at or near the top of the hierarchy at the tim eyou are hunting. Same goes for cover and other matters. If it's bitterly cold, but not windy, deer may seek open places to take advantage of the sun. If it's warm, they may do the opposite. Know your deer population: Tactics that work in one place don't necessarily work someplace else. For instance, where I hunt here in VA, there one buck for about every ten+ or so does. This means that the bucks are less territorial than usual, so antler rattling, which I understand works in some places, doesn't work here at all. Finally, something that probably doesn't need to be said: Learn from your experience and, especially, learn from others who haveexperience *relevant* toyour situation. I'm still a fawn here on this site, but it looks like there's a bunch of good, experienced hunters on here who are willing to share lots of good information, and even *gasp* knowledge! Take advantage of it! Oh, and one more thing:Be safe! |

I like your thinking Madeline. You would still need to be a hunter though. I know some guys who would still not come away with a deer. They just can't hunt unless you tell then where to sit and which direction the deer will come from. That's where some of the other tips would be helpful. One tip I gave one such guy was to get his climber higher than 8' of the ground and when he hears deer coming don't get down and chase them.:Dlol. True story.
Still, good observation.:D |

25. Hunt whenever you can. Who cares about moon phase, temp, time of year. Your not going to kill a big boy sitting at home on the couch or in bed!!!!
