Baiting 101 lessons from Gramps
 

I am going to share my Grandpa’s baiting secrets. These are time-tested secrets, I am going to share. This year marks the first year we will not hunt together since I was 5. He is 78 and father time has finally got to him. Cannot make it out, I have put up his stand on my farm, nobody will hunt it. Just not the same without him in his the tree.

He was there for my first; I shot a doe in northern MI at his stand. All the grandson’s shot there first at grandpa’s stand. He was also there when I shot a huge 8, scored 126’’, but weighed in at 250lbs, he about had a stroke. He is a meat hunter to the core.

While I do not hunt over bait, here is how my Grandpa did it:


Less is more

Grandpa believes in only one five-gallon bait out at a time. He wanted to create competion for the bait. First deer in gets the good stuff!!

Slice the Applies

Applies need to be sliced, first it makes it easier for the fawns to eat. Second the smell travels better!!

Protect your Bait pile from Critters

It wascommon to find gramps squirrel hunting around his bait pile. Once he eliminated the squirrel population in the area, he knew his bait would be safe. We knew a great squirrel dinner was coming!! When things were bad he employed the sniper plan. Take a grandson and shoot the chipmunks off his pile, and yes I have help him do so. Those chipmunks eat a handful corn in an afternoon, he would say.

When you get a hot spot keep quite, only tell your favorite Grandson!!

He was 62 when he shot his first deer with a bow; I was up at the cabin with him. He then went on a terror, LOL

I like it! Reminds me of being a kid in Michigan learning how to hunt. That's how we all did it back in the day! Say what you want about baiting, but it's one way to get kids to see deer and get them hooked. That's how I started. Nice post :).

Good ole Gramps. I never hunted with any family except the traditions I'm making with my young ones.

If I had one wish in life.......I'd wish that my grandpa could see the man that I've become......and could see my son. He was the greatest man I ever knew. Thanks, GHemry......I'm glad you posted that.

On a lighter note.....baiting is legal here in NC. I keep feeders up all year, here......but the apple trick is a good one (though I'm not using apples, this year.....I'm trying to keep everything in my ONE spot.......as normal as possible). I use to put out apples on the ground......and step on them on the way out. That'll get the scent in the air.

Sounds good, but in my neck of the woods the hogs would be the first to arive.:D:D
