Opinions please
Ok here's the deal. We (buddy and I) have permission to hunt a500 acre chunk of land. We are the only ones that bowhunt it, but there is one other guy that gun hunts there.
For the last few years we agreed that we would stay away from his corner of the property that he gun hunts. We setup for bow as far away from his spot as we can. We have only been hunting there for the last 5 years. He has been there a lot longer. Before we got permision to hunt there, he used to have posted signs around the property with his name on them. Anyone who called or asked him if they could hunt there, he would tell them no (including me). He would tell everyone he owned the land. I finally found out he didn't own squat. I asked the real landowner if I could hunt there and he said yes. Anyway........ back to the topic. As you can probably tell we arent' exactly best of friends. He didn't really want us on "his" land since day one. We tried tobe as civil and cooperative with him as possible seeing as how we were the "new " guys. To this day we don't even go close to his area (the only spot) he hunts. Most of our stands are hundreds of acres away. Come to find out through talking to him and others. He is slaughtering every buck that walks by his stand during gun season. I heard right from his mouth he took 6 bucks last year!! I am so infuriated by that it makes me want to puke. Pisses me off that we work our butts off, do everythingby the book, respect the outdoors etc...... and this poaching scum waddles down to his tree stand opening day of gun and starts slaying deer after deer illegally. Most of which are bucks I watch walk 10 yards in front of me during bowseason. What would you do? Would you still respect him and his little "poacher spot" on the property? I have half a mind to go hang a stand in his area and hunt the S&%# out of it before gun season. I've talked to the DEC about it several times. Seems like that fell on deaf ears. I'm not sure what to do. Lease the land from the real owner? Kick the poacher in the head? Stay status quo and let him have his spot? Find someplace else to hunt? Opinions please! p.s. For those of you that think we were wrong in invading his hunting land in the first place.... It's tough to paint a picture of what this dude is like over a message board. He's a liar, poacher, thief, etc... and I have zero tolerance for it. If it were a different scenario, I probably wouldn't have tried to get permission to hunt that land that another hunting party has had for years. Just a different situation with a different kind of person. I'm not the only one in the area that feels that way either. |
RE: Opinions please
personally ny i would go and talk to the land owner first and then if that didnt work i would take every measure i could to get the dec down there if that didnt work i would destroy his hunting spot by walking through it daily during bow season amongst other things:Dgood luck that situation sucks

RE: Opinions please
It seems that talking with the land owner is the way to go and see what hesays. Then you know exactly where you stand and what to do next.
|
RE: Opinions please
talk to the landowner and if that does not work try to get him slaying deer on camera and anonamously turn that intoyour game commissioner. This guy is giving hunters abad name good luck
|
RE: Opinions please
I have considered mentioning it to the landowner. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't really care either way. He's an older guy (not a hunter) and I'm almost certain he could care less who is shooting what. If anything I would feel like I'm burdening him with a problem that has nothing to do with him and he could care less about.

RE: Opinions please
Wow, NY that is crappy situation. I know exactly what you mean by this guy giving hunters a bad name. My only advise is to keep going to your game commision (DEC)? and if you get no individual there to hear you loud and clear and do his job, then go up the ladder, ask for his supervisor and persist. You may make 1 or 2 guys annoyed at you, but screw them if they do not want to earn their pay... keep going up the ladder until you get a guy who is like minded and who cares not only about doing his job, that you pay the wages for, but who also cares for the rules and the game.
Good luck to you. DW |
RE: Opinions please
I agree...try and get the game warden involved...if that doesnt work.....after your done bowhunting....go out on opening day of shotgun season.....with a radio, and set up a stand on the tree besides him....wait for him to get there...let him set up, and then just say.." Hey, how are you?" turn on the radio...light up the grill....cook some breakfast....have a few friends with ya.....get a keg....I hate poachers...they suck.

RE: Opinions please
The down side of this whole deal is that you will be devoting time effort and energy to the negativity created by this bozo, for me I wouldn't want it to take away time from my hunting or other things I would rather be doing.
If the dec wont arrest his a-- and you feel a need to ruin this guy's poaching activities, there are a number of ways to ruin his area, without being obvious about it.walking through the area repeatedly, cheap aftershave thrown about the area, you are only limited by your creativity.Unfortunately it is time taken away from productive things you could be doing. It sucks that he is killing that many bucks out of an area that could likely be excellent,(probably killing young bucks to boot). At the very least I would likely walk the perimeter of the guys area and try to cut off his area to get a crack at the best animal or animals the area holds before this guy gets in there. Not really my nature,I would prefer to be some other place where this kind of thing is not an issue. As an aside,I was at Yankee Stadium last night with my wife and daughter and daughters freind. The Yankees had lots of hitting going on,Jeter,Abreu, and Rodriquez all had three hits a piece.I hate NYC,I hate driving in NYC.We had great seats behind the visitors dugout 8 rows off the field, our daughter and her freind loved it,so I will endure the stuff I don't like for that! |

As for the bozo (fitting term - I like that). I could ruin his little heaven of a spot he has on that land. Like someone said, that is just going to take time away from what I'm trying to do. Plus, I dont' want to stoop to his level. The game warden I talked to merely took down his name and address. It was more because he felt obligated to do at least that. Then he laid the sob story of how thin spread they are and catching people like that is next to impossible. That was a reassuring conversation. I offered to do whatever I could to help, but he still didnt' sound too interested in any of it. I have half a mind to say to heck with him and go hang a stand where I know I'll have a crack at a monster during bowseason, which happens to be right around where he is. Why should I respect this guy or his spot on that land? |
RE: Opinions please
I also hunt in NY.I would look in your hunting regulations that they give you when you buy your license. They have a list of Environmental Conservation Officersfor every deer management unit,DMU.
Call theEnvironmental Conservation Officerthat's closest to your hunting area. They have to check out every complaint. They also have a number to call 1-800-TIPP-DEC,to turn in poachers or any violater. You can report violations 24 hours per day.Give them as much information that you can on the poacher. His license plate number, where he hunts, when is the best time to catch him poaching, ect: |
RE: Opinions please
Why should I respect this guy or his spot on that land? If this guy is poaching deer and the DNR won't/can't do anyting about it, have the local sheriff's dept. there when he comes out of the woods. If a deputy see's he is in violation, then he can radio for a DNR officer to come there right then. But then this guys is pretty much going to know who has turned him in so be ready for some childish BS to get started. |
RE: Opinions please
Ya know man don't let this guy bring you down! Any where you go there are going to be people like him. Remain the sportsman you are keep away from his area like you have as statis que. Just like you have been doing. If you get the state boys down there they just might start hasseling you too. You know how Law enforcement looks at the regular citizens we are all criminals they just haven't caught us yet they are the only ones allowed to break the law and get away with it. You know I'm right with this. I know it sucks to have this in your face but you don't want the land owner to know there is any contraversy as he may just say the heck with it and put you all off. Private land rights are something to be real protective of these days so be real careful. Thats just my 2 cents mand take it for what its worth
|
RE: Opinions please
I'd probably go the route of making his area a place deer avoid.
Yeah, cheap aftershave, cheap perfume, coyote piss, etc... Let's face it, the guy's an idiot and deserves it. |
RE: Opinions please
as i have said earlier air freseners scare deer away;)
|
RE: Opinions please
Poachers make me sick! If you can catch him doing it,turn him in. Listen for shots, every time he shootsgo over and make sure that helegally tags every deer. If he knows that you willinvestigate every shot he will be forced to do it legal or face the law.

RE: Opinions please
I know the DNR here in Wisconsin have been known to stake out hunting sites that have suspected violators. Talk to them again and bust his A$$!!

RE: Opinions please
I agree with one of the earlier posts. Don't waste productive time. It's precious time that really shouldn't be wasted. But, If you dip or chew save your spit in dasani/ aquafina / pop bottles...with a screw on cap of course.
Slip over to his area and pour it around his stand, possible shooting lanes, and of course as the rut nears, pour it in every danged scrape you find in his area. It'll make a scrape go cold pronto. I know this from experience as I had a couple individuals that had stands on a piece of property I was bowhuntin a couple years ago. Their stands were set up near several different scrapes. They killed nothing. I scored on a nice 135" buck the following week. I moved my stand sets to an area not 1000 yds from theirs. I was in the money, they scratched their heads knowing I had only a few weeks to hunt and they lived local to the property I had permission on. BTW they had no permission. The land owner still has their stands and steps in his barn. I hear that moth ball work wonders as well. I know it's frustrating to deal with. You're better off to look past the situation. However, should you possibly get the urge to retaliate and waste some time like I did, lay the tobacco juice on thick and heavy! LOL |
RE: Opinions please
Ny, you and a buddy only bowhunt the property and the other guy only gun hunts it. Bowhunt where you want then remove your stands that are near him just before gun season.........not out of respect but to make sure he doesn't steal or "mess" with them.
Some advice. Don't feel bad about hunting there because he has been there longer. For the last few years I've had to share some favorite areas with hunters who recently gained permission and NOT one of them ever respected where I hunted or where my stands were placed. I even have an agreement with a guy and neither of us care for each other...........whereas if I am in a certain spot first, he goes somewhere else and vice versa. Early bird gets the worm for that day so to speak! |
RE: Opinions please
There's only one thing to do man. You have to sabotage his spot. The cologne idea is great. Just take a walk thru there every now and then. It could even put his deer on you.
Look at the big picture. You turn him in, they harrass the landowner also. Before you know it, the landowner spooks out and boots both of you off the land and posts it. Then you screwed yourself. God will handle him. He'll run into bad luck sooner or later. Stick with the plan, hunt away from him, and good luck. |
RE: Opinions please
i would talk to the land owner, and try the authorities again. if nothing happens get yourself a buddy who needs to rifle hunt set-up near him and video him shooting deer or dragging them out and show it to the game commision they cant ignore that. i know a few guys near me who kill a ton of deer everyyear from there car ,out season, more then they have tags for, and alot just to shoot and leave there. they got busted last year shooting a bucj while spotting and two days latter i see their truck right back in the area parked and they were hunting again. i got them on my trail cam before season started walking in camo with a rifle, finger on the trigger and looking ahead for deer. but they always seem to get away with it other then that one time. i plan on calling the game commission everytime i see them doing something wrong, i used to look the other way but when my treestands got stolen and then i found them in there hunting spots thats was all over. keep at it i personally feel its worth my time to get idiots like that out of the woods and help people who follow the rules have a better hunting area.

RE: Opinions please
Ya know, if YOU overhunt a stand, deer will tend to avoid it in the future. ;)
I hear barbersusually throw away the hair they cut off each day. ;) Since the gun hunter has been having success there AND YOU KNOW WHERE IT IS, use it as often as possible before the season. |
RE: Opinions please
Come on..............LOL.......he is hitting you with the oldest trick in the book:D
He didn't kill that many - he sure fired you up though............... Forget what OTHER people SAY they do in the woods and just keep on hunting. |

Forget what OTHER people SAY they do in the woods and just keep on hunting. Maybe I'll approach the landowner and ask him if we could lease the land from him. Boot the bozo out of there all together. |
RE: Opinions please
If it is true waste his stand.
Human hair and "shock".......thats pool chlorine, will bring his numbers down a bit:D |
