Analyze my hunting land
I would like to get some input on where I should be hunting on this piece of property (located in MN). This year the farmer planted corn on all of it. This makes it to hunt the small field on the Eastern side of the property. I plan on bowhunting, muzzleloader hunting, and maybe shotgun hunt during the second week of firearm season. The majorit of the property is a mixture of Oak, popplar, maple, and alder. The yellow circles represent ground blinds and tree stands. The blue circles represent swamps, which are mostly dry.

Here is the topo that goes with the post above.

RE: Analyze my hunting land
What are the prevailing winds during the season? How many acres? Anyheavily used runways going through the property? Rub Lines? It would nice to see adjoining pieces of property too.
|
RE: Analyze my hunting land
The wind is usually from the NW or North, the propertyis 160 acres. The purple dots represent major deer trails and the red dots represent rub lines I have found in the past.

Here is a pic that shows some of the neighboring land.

I'd say you/re in good shape bro, just by looking. Good luck.

RE: Analyze my hunting land
Man that's a tough call, they all look pretty good. I would say theSWstandis my least favorite of the 4 you have, but really, I think any of them would rock.
|
RE: Analyze my hunting land
I'd be putting a yellow spot on the far left blue line between them 2 openings in the wood break.
|
RE: Analyze my hunting land
There's really not a bad spot in the bunch , I particularly like that little island in between your lower ground blind sites . What a honey hole !
|
RE: Analyze my hunting land
I like the spots you have picked out. I placed an orange dot where I think you my also want to place a stand.

Where in MN is this? When is farmer Bob going to harvest his corn. I hunt 1 farm, the owner chops his corn and feeds it out early. Keep this in mind. Your food source may be gone in a few weeks.

RE: Analyze my hunting land
Your stands look pretty good but keep in mind the corn and a lot of you stands being near the fields. It might not hurt to put a stand on the leftside where you have the woods meeting the old swamp, think transition zones ecspecially when the rut picks up. that trail running between those 2 swamps might be an excellent ambush also. That left side swamp also seems to form a bottleneck with the strip of woods on the far left between that clearing and again at the top of the swamp and the other field/clearing. A lot of things are really determined byhow you manage yourwind and your entry and exit options but that's my 2 cents. Nice maps and good luck.

RE: Analyze my hunting land
If the prevailing winds are the direction of the red arrow I would consider additional stands where I have marked the violet boxes. This assumes the deer are not bedding in the cornfields but rather in the NW corner of the property or NE on the neighbors property.

RE: Analyze my hunting land
okodaka,
If I'm not mistaken, it looks like yahoo maps beta. http://maps.yahoo.com/beta/index.php# enter your location in the upperleft corner. Once you have the location you want, click on the satellite link of map to show your photo. |
RE: Analyze my hunting land
I would take every thing in that has been said. Than I would place a stand in the middle of the feild,as tall as I could get and look at what kame out where.Than do it in the small field in the north east corner.Than in betwen the swamp and the opening on the north west.
There will be deer come out all over this nice peace of land.Any where you put a stand you will see deer. But if you want a chance at a nice buck you need to find out where he is living. He may be on the naabers land just comeing to eat you hunting spot. Or he may live there and leaving every night. You need to get as high as you can with good binos or spoting scope FIND THE BIG BOY.Let him tell you where to put your stand. NOW seeing That you are hunting in the bow contest go to your stand with a beeting tin cans and yelling HERE DEER. Charles |

RE: Analyze my hunting land
For all you MN hunters, here is an awesome link for some arial photos.
http://www.lmic.state.mn.us/chouse/naip03mrsid.html The farmer never picks his corn before the last week of october on this piece of land. Thanks for all your advice. |
RE: Analyze my hunting land
Did you watch thevideo Korn Krazed Deer, wherea professional hunter was hunting deer right in the cornfield? He hung deer stands as close to the corn as he could. Then he would trample the corn,in certain area'sout to 35 to 40 yards. He made shooting lanes in the cornfield. Then he would use deer decoys and scent.
I'm sure he had permission to trample the corn or he owned it. It worked great! He and his son killed 3 very nice buck.He said that deer bed in cornfields all the time. |
RE: Analyze my hunting land
If the neighbors to the NW hunt much, I would have a stand in that corner to intercept whatever they push your way. Up by the red arrow placed there for wind direction.
