both eyes open or not?
ive been bow hunting for 20 years and i have always been able to shoot good groups out to 50 yards but just for the hell of it ive been starting to shoot with both eyes open and man did i shrink my groups even tighter. im grouping the size of a golfball out to 50 yards and at 60 yards im shooting like the size of a tennis ball. just curious if you guys have tried it or do it. if not try it. its a little awkward at first but man it works

RE: both eyes open or not?
I also shoot both open. It's easier, and takes less effort. Better focus as well.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
I've started shooting with both eyes open as well, but I haven't seen any noticable differences in group sizes.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
I line up with both then close 1.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
I shoot with both open with rifle or bow. It's alot easier to accquire the target using both eyes.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
so with a peep sight it would be difucult?????[:-]
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
I find my target with both open, the squint and refocus on a particular spot. I know it sounds weird but it works for me.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
well i actually expirament with it today, i would use one eye and then open both. I didnt notice any tighter groups but ill keep trying it
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
Both eyes open. You can't believe how much better you can see the impact. I use the wide peep. I shoot the shot gun with both eyes open also. Actually your suppose to.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
Both eye's open with no peep, I have never had the dreaded"I could not see the deer thru my peep"
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
I have never been able to shoot with both open. Don't really know why but I just can't.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
I believe that two eves open is best, but I can't do it. The best I can do is to draw back and start sighting with both open then close my left at the last second and finish the shot.

RE: both eyes open or not?
ORIGINAL: Anthony T. I shoot with both open with rifle or bow. It's alot easier to accquire the target using both eyes. |
RE: both eyes open or not?
It depends which eye is dominant. If you're right eye-right hand dominate then both eyes open will work for you. If you're left eye-right hand dominant it'll be harder for you.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
For hunting I think both eyes open is a must! You can see your target so much better, and often your target is in low light. One thing is if you shoot both eyes open you need to make sure you are shooting with your dominant eye....this is very important. If you shoot with the correct eye dominace you can shoot with one eye open or closed.....it really doesn't matter. If you don't shoot with your dominant eye and you shoot eyes open or closed you will and could have real problems. If you don't shoot with you dominate eye, you probably have to shoot one eye closed!
Good Luck! |
RE: both eyes open or not?
When I try that I always see double. I guess I have bad eyes.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
i shoot both eyes open, but i shoot a recurve andmy compound to. i think both eyes open lets you stay calmer and less likely to pull a shot, you can see everything and no little surprises.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
I shoot one eye open i am right handed but left eye dominate so its hard to focus with both open. I think if you can shoot with both open its the way to go
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
I shoot with both eyes open, with no problems but I would do what ever works for you,,,but I think both eyes open is best.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
yea since ive started shooting both eyes open its totally helped my acuracy. i am using a peep and it doesnt seem to bother me with focusing. i was just curious how many others do it. thanks for all the feedback

RE: both eyes open or not?
ORIGINAL: MO_Bowhnter I have never been able to shoot with both open. Don't really know why but I just can't. I can't do both eyes open. Believe me I've tried.... I get all goofy when I try it. I see two sight pins or two targets, depending on how I focus. There has to be a trick to it.... I just haven't figured it out yet. [:-] |
RE: both eyes open or not?
I tried it and had double vision too. When you figure ou which is which(with one eye closed) then open both I can still shoot well but why bother.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
Here's how to figure out your dominate eye. Make a circle with your hands and hold them out in front of you. Now look at something on the other side of the room. Close your left eye. If you can still see the object, you are right eye dominant. If you close your right eye and you can still see the object, your left eye is your domnant one.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
See good with both open but focus better with one on the pin. Mine gets goofy with both open too. All that matters is getting rrr done.
Nothing wrong with experimenting and I'd say the off season's pretty long so what else is there to do. Things just need to be given the right amount of time to see if it really helps. When you start anticipating the shot, which takes time after changing anything in a routine, and it's still better, it may actually be better. Until then your brain is not telling you to shoot and that's alwaysthe problem in the first place.IMO. We shoot well then worse, we change something and shoot well and then worse again, we change something... The brain is the only common denominator.:D |
RE: both eyes open or not?
I shoot pretty much the same both ways.
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
always have shot with both open
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
Are you using a peep sight ?
|
RE: both eyes open or not?
This is my first post here but a long time lurker. I started off shooting with my right eye(dominant). I was working with maybe 8 to 10 inch groups at 40 yds. I then beganshooting w/ both eyes open. Often, my vision was out of wack and everything was blurry or doubled. I then tried sighting in withright eye, and then opening both before I shot. The results turned out great and I'm now shooting a 2 inch group. I even got my first robinhood a few days ago. You get a better field of vision w/ both eyes open, and for me, I can line up the shot almost perfectly because I can see the arrow at full draw, and tell if my anchor point is off.
The wierd thing is,I can only shoot with my right eye when in a treestand. I tried both eyes and ended up with the messy groups. |
