Best Way Of Sighting or Setting Up Sights

Hi all,

First off let me introduce myself as I am new to the forums. My name is Shaun Wallace and I live in Ireland, although I amEnglish. I run a company that designs simulations and training for the USMC, out of Lejune, 29 Palms etc.

I am relatively new to archery, having started lonnbow archery about a year ago and am now getting into compund bow archery. I have managed to get the bow setup, although this has meant me doing it myself as help in the wilds of Ireland is hard to find lol.

I am however having problems setting up and using the sights I have bought and would welcome any help.

I am including some screens of how I have the sight setup and am hoping someone can help with some advice on getting the sight 100% correct (or as near as is feasible) I may have made some stupid mistakes etc, I am really looking for some good advice ;)

Bow Info:
Buckmaster G270#
Sight: Top Gun F18 Sight
Hi Lite Scope Crosshair/Level
Quicktune 800 Arrow Rest
Truefire Pro Release Aid (Palm)

Pics of Setup:

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Cheers and Thanks,

Shaun

Well first off, id try to get rid of the cross hair hight, its not really needed with the main site you have. The from there I would make sure the main sight is square. I would also think about getting a peep installed. Go to your local archery shop to have this done they will make sure its setup right. As for the sights, Start in with sighting your top sight pin in anwhere between 15-20 yards what ever your comfortable shooting at. The sight your second pin at 30 yards, you can sight in your 3rd sight pin in at 40 if you wish but many of ushere will not recomend a shot over 30 yards. A problem I am seeing with your setup is that its too "busy" you have the extra sight on there that is not needed. Lose it. Its just another piece that will cause sight in problems because the way you have it you will will never be true because you would have to adjust both sights. Lose that cross hair sight and sight in, you ll find it soo much easier and be more accurate. Also remember to make sure youre shooting the correct spine arrow for your draw weight. And remember what I said go to your local pro shop and have a peep put on your string, you may also want to install some limb savers adn string leeches, but its not necessary for the limbsavers and leeches. Good luck hope this helps you. And Welcome aboard.

Hia Mate,

Many thanks for the swift reply. The person I bought the sight off said I needed both (hmm... they would!)

So the crosshair is surplus to requirements? I don't have a local shop, I really live in the wilds of Western Ireland. Can I fit a peep sight myself?

Cheers

Shaun

You can install a peep yourself however you need some type of bow press to take tension off of the limbs to get into your string. There are several articles with pictures on Google that show you step by step. Good luck and drink an Irish cold one for me eh?

Go ahead and remove that cross hair site as well, its not required to have two different sights on any bow, unless you have laws there that require to have a crosshair and pin sites.

Hi Wis,

I have just ordered a peep site from the UK and will see how I go fitting it.

I have got rid of the crosshair site and am now just going to use the 3 point. (which actually makes more sense)

I will let you know how I go, any tips always welcome as although am used to longbow shooting, compund is very new to me!

BTW: Great to find a forum thats so welcoming, its an unusual thing to find nowadays ;)

Cheers

Shaun

PS: the Guiness here has to be drunk to be believed lol <G>

Many have suggested losing the Hindsight that is installed, the idea for this sight is the same as a firearm requiring nothaving to use a peep sight.A problem I see is it looks as if you are shooting with fingers and not a release set up which is ok, but a release will give you better accuracy. You also have no point of reference as far as an anchor point, such as a peep and or a kisser button (on the bow string), using a kisser and apeep sight will almost always bring the bowstring in contact with the side of your nosegiving you three points of contact to align your sight picture and help you to be consisitent in your full draw (now you can lose the crosshair sight). With a compoundbow you want to make sure to maintain constant back pressure before and during the release or that can cause your arrows to go astray.

Others have made a god ppint about ridding the bow of the rear crosshair sight. It has couple of drawbacks. One; it' too close to the pins sight and the short sight radius deems it "not as accurate" as using a string peep that may give you a sight radius of 30" or so. Two, it relly seems to clutter up and confuse the sight picture.

You can even do without a string peep if you desire although it does help a lot. To shoot without a peep you must have pretty consisitent anchor points, which I don't recommend for beginners.

You could also install a kisser button in lieu of a peep. Basically, what they do is align your face to the string to reinforce your anchor points. But if you want the best achievable accuracey the peep is the way to go.

Other than that your setup doesn't sound too bad. We all had to start somewhere.

Good luck.

From what I can tell you don't even have the hindsite. You just have the cross hair apeture from one screwed into the back of your sight mount. I see no way to adjust the cross hairs vertically. If this is the case there is no way that will work. It will be impossible to adjust to your form. If you want to use that you would have to get actual hindsite bracket so you can make the proper adjustments.

I used to have a hindsite and it worked, but not as well as a peep sight. I gave it to a buddy and he loves it, but he doesn't shoot that well to be honest so I don't think he notices the difference in accuracy. Another route you could go if you wanted to go peepless is using the No Peep. I liked it better than the Hindsite to be honest. Now I shoot well enough that if I don't want a peep, I just take it out all together. If you have consistant enough form you really don't need one for closer ranges and groups that can be effective on large game. However if you want to be really accurate and or shoot longer distances a peep sight is easier to do this with.

Basically the way you have those sights set up with that cross hair thing will not work, no way no how. But since you took it off it doesn't matter anyway.;)
