What we really hate about hunting shows

The thing i hate the most is that most shows will take 20 minutes to even see the deer there going to shoot. why dont they show some down time kill the deer and then give helpful hints and show some of the ways they track the deer after the shot. I watch the shows to see if i can learn anything. but after watching the same stuff over and over since i was in diapers it really doesnt help. i only watch the shows anymore to see if maybe they get that monster buck

I agree with you. Not much info. Just shooting and gawking.

RE: What we really hate about hunting shows

If they really wanted to show some things that would be informational, rather than promotional, they'd go into the hunt more. Example, my stand is 22 feet off the ground to the platform. I'm hunting this trail because, yada yada yada.....here's a speck of blood, here's another etc etc. Don't have the dang camera the other side of the deer zooming in on you as you look up surprised and say, "There he is". GIVE ME A BREAK!!! Go ahead, field dress the dang thing and show a kid what's going to have to be done. If you can't do it on TV, at least do it on the videos you sell in the stores. Why NOT!!!!

Speaking of videos, I broke down and bought another the other day. I gave away about 125 of them a while back and said I wouldn't buy any more. Well, I bought this one "Whitetail Country". What a piece of crap. It was 2 hours of all the "BIG NAMES" in hunting shows telling how great each other is. Hardly any hunting to the thing. It was totally, "LOOK AT US. YOU SHOULD BE IMPRESSED". It is the worst video I've ever seen. BULL HOCKEY.

Amen... I think THAT'S the part that has always got under my skin more than anything else. ;)

RE: What we really hate about hunting shows

I've got a video by Knight & Hale -- I think it was last year's double whitetail set -- where this cute redhead shoots a deer, waits a long time to go after it because of the shot placement, but when she gets there, the deer's legs are all folded up under it like it's bedded down... I've NEVER approached a dead deer where its legs were anything but splayed out to the side.

How many times do you see a shot that is obviously about 6-8" too far back, probably a gut shot, they proclaim what a great shot it was and then find the animal and claim it didn't go 80yds. I sometimes wonder if they just came back the next day to track it? Be honest and we can all learn something.

RE: What we really hate about hunting shows

I mentioned this in the other thread about videos as well.

I cannot stand to hear them LAUGH immediately following a good shot on a deer. It's disrespectful to the animal whose life you just took. You can express many emotions following a good shot. I do too and I have nothing against expressing them. Laughing though just makes us look like a bunch of goofballs that think it's funny to "kill things." Bad PR in my book.

Dave i agree with you a hundred percent, these shows are becoming a joke. They find a deer etc. in a short search thats stiff already, and the animals mouthis all cleaned up. These shows are making it easy for none hunters to hate our guts with all this cheering going on after the shot, this is not the way to show our sport. Rich

RE: What we really hate about hunting shows

I agree, it's really not a laughing matter.
All the fist pumping, dancing and carrying on is just goofy.
I have never done any of those things? Course I'm not in a tree with a cameraman on national TV either?
I think a more somber reaction is more the norm among hunters?
If i tried to dance around I'd probably fall out of the tree!

Couple other things I notice that I don't like.
While everyone preaches scent control(and they advertise it heavily on the same shows), you see these guys having breakfast in their hunting clothes, going out, hopping in a truck or BadBoy Buggie, riding outto their stands? Doesn't anyone put their hunting clothes on after they get out of the truck and are ready to walk to their stands? Now I am not the most fanatical about scent control but I don't stop at Perkins on the way to hunt? I always make sure my truck has gas so I don't have to stop and get all gassy smelling on the way to hunt. I even spray the inside of my truck with scent killer. The cab of my truck smells like dirt!

They also make it look like they just roll out of bed, put on camo and go hunting. Doesn't anyone shower before they go out? I know I do. Not like they need to show it but at least make it appear that they get up extra early so they have time to? In the winter I have to get up an hour and half before I leave the house. I have long hair and it takes about an hour for it to dry. Frozen hair is no fun,let me tell you!

I, for one, could use a fewless "kill shots" and more informational stuff on where to place a stand, how high and why,Trailing hit deer(real trailing, not with the cameraman already there),tips on how to gain access on land to hunt, Field dressing info, calling, etc
I think they should also show the reality of missing(not that I EVER miss:eek:)

Hopefully some in the industry will see these posts and adjust their shows.

The shows are all about the equipment they are marketing. How many shows have you seen that it didn't take five+ minutes to get throught the sponsors. It's not about the hunt, it's about what they can get you pumped up enough to buy from their sponsors! "We shot this animal with a blah blah blah brand name using a blah blah blah brand name, under the cover of a blah blah blah brand name..." Think it would be the same if they didn't get paid the big bucks!!
Make it real and have someone comout with a five year oldDarton and maybea sight from last year... TM hunter rest....
Then go through the hunt from the time they walk out of the camp in the morning... until they close the cooler on a quarted out animal... Now I would buy that video, and anyone that watched it would understand more of what takes place and what you are taking responsibility for in a hunt.

I agree the animated and verbal antics is annoying. Plus it does take forever before you get a deer shot. I agree with BuellHunter to show the reality of missing would be more beliveable. That's not to say they aren't top-notch hunters.....

I hate the fact that these people set on a stand and watch numerous 100-130 inch deer walk buy and comment on how in one or two more years that would be a "shooter" The word "shooter" ticks me off too!

RE: What we really hate about hunting shows

To be more realistic i wish they would put some type of counter or time tracker recording the day and the number of hours on stand or they have been hunting. Sometimes you will hear a guy sy that he has been on the hunt for 7 days etc but a breakdown would be more interesting.

As far as what they could show, i know its all about commercialism and selling products thats keeps the shows on the air but did you realize that out of a half hour show they only get about 18 mintues of actual footage and the rest is promos, commercials etc. Not much time to get things done or explain in any detail.

the #1 thing that i hate is when the hunters takes the guides credit like i worked my butt of to kill this deer by scouting and watching but it is a 5 day hunt did you arrive 3 weeks early and scout the guide did it give them the credit they need you make the shot and half of the time they arent that good

RE: What we really hate about hunting shows

Yep the shows are getting more lame every day. To me, any schmuck can go to an outfitter and sit in the appointed stand and shoot the deer that steps in front of him and proclaim how hard his hunt was.I would like to see a show where they hunted entirely PUBLIC ground, where any body can go for FREE. I don't even need to see kills, close calls and near misses would be good enough for me because that's what keeps you hunting. It would be nice to show why they chose their location, whether they found it through a topo or aerial map or through scouting, etc. What would be great to see is a guy hunting in his stand and have some other hunter(s) walk by or scale a tree next to theirs and start hunting, no that would be realistic! As aggravated as I get with them I still watch the silly shows, almost daily, not sure why. I do know, though, by watching the shows and seeing the big bucks has helped me become more "comfortable" when they are around me when hunting

RE: What we really hate about hunting shows

Hunting shows aren't about hunting, they are about business/advertising for equipment companies. Sure, I watch a few hunting shows when I'm pumped about hunting, but when I want real information I go back and read all my books on hunting/archery. I emphasize "books", not magazines, which are often (not always) as much about business/advertising as the tv shows. You can learn a lot by reading an unbiased hunting/archery book.

RE: What we really hate about hunting shows

Its funny this came up I was in my local hunting shop today and noticed he had some new videos one was a tutorial on how to field dress and care for the meat in all different situations and they show deer elf bear etc. looks very educational. The other was a video on how to track your game after the shot weather it was a good shot or bad. I can't recall who its made by. I think most hunting shows are lame its to set up I could never figure out how one minute the camera guy is behind or beside the hunter then all of a sudden the hunter begins to draw on the animal and somehow the camera guy is in front of him getting that at cool aiming at the camera shot. As far as guys laughing after a good shot I don't see what the big deal is I giggle to when I make a good shot and if I have someone with me I would high five them how is that being disrespectful? I am out there to enjoy the outdoors and the nature and the hunt and the KILL(it's one of my favorite parts of hunting I love to watch em go down) and the venison after. I think what we should all do is make are own videos. I mean I am sure 80% percent of the guys on this web site have the technology and know how to make and burn their own dvds its not hard to make a cover for them and get them out there. I would buy movies made from the guys on this site that I know that they are making it for the hunting and they are real right from the scouting and seting up to the KILL and the field dressing and not made for the advertising and MONEY and just to get their name on something.

RE: What we really hate about hunting shows

I have seen this many times....particularly out in the west where open country prevails. The hunter is using the "stalking" method, the guide is right there with him,and the unseen one is the cameraperson. The threeare "stalking" the prey, yet they are out in the open not attempting to use any cover to their advantage, walking completely erect and talking in a normal manner.....maybe an occasional loud whisper. Then.....WOW! There he is crossing before them down the hill so the hunter whips out his shooting sticks and makes a lot of noise getting in position to take that shot. The animal stops broadside and the shooter waits and waits and waits and finally nails the wary prey with a great shot that amazes the crusty old guide.
Yup..... you've seen 'em too and they'll continue as long as we keep buying the camo and the beer and the bows and guns and the insurance.....all the stuff advertised on the show. I love it.

Yessir, i cannot freakin stand that...i mean if the camera man is actually that much of a better tracker to where he can find the deer, and setup and film you commin in from 40 yds away...let him hunt...haha...at least he'll get there first...but really dont make it so damn scripted..i mean c'mon now.

I HEAR THAT! Yea i say buy her a Browning Bathin Suit and let her go huntin in that...good god man, its a sin!;)

But I'm only 17 and i like to see the shows like "Realtree Road Trips" just because i want to see a little goofin off...but as it happens...not none of that scripted stuff ya know...but also i want to see shows that are informative, i mean these shows tell us stuff that we already know, except the lone few that actually give out new tips, tricks, and stuff, but its pretty rare....ok my fingers are tired
