Default Sunday Hunting in Virginia

It looks like this issue may be starting to get a head of steam. If you're supportive this would be a great time to contact your representative on the VDGIF and contact the Governor and remind him of his campaign pledge.

From today's Roanoke Times:

Sunday hunting on DGIF's radar

Let's say you ran a business that was slowly but steadily losing
customers. Yet by law you are allowed to be open only six days a
week, and the day you are closed could be one of your busiest days
for customer visits.

That's the challenge facing the Virginia Department of Game and
Inland Fisheries because of the ban on Sunday hunting.

When the department recently raised license fees, many of the hunters
who complained about the increase cited the Sunday hunting ban as a
primary reason.

The game department can't change the law, and its leaders have been
skittish about getting anywhere near the controversial topic.

But that may be changing.

The topic of Sunday hunting is listed on the agenda of the board's
Wildlife and Boating Committee for its meeting Monday at 3 p.m. at
the department's office in Richmond.

The agenda for the full board meeting the next day hasn't been
released, but it seems likely that the committee's Sunday hunting
discussion will be addressed.

Even though the department can't change the law, the agency's general
approach to the topic certainly can affect the attitudes of
legislators who do make the laws.

The idea of eliminating the ban already has one important supporter
in Richmond. During his campaign last year Gov. Tim Kaine publicly
said he disagrees with the ban..

Well I'm for it although I could be persuaded to leave it the way it is if the ban had some merit to it. I've never heard the laws reasoning.

they have no merit . you should be able to hunt on Sundays if you want .I don't hunt there but i hope they get revoked for you

Same issue here in Maryland. I have been fighting it for two years and just recently got our St. Mary's county delegate to agree to sponsor a bill to change the law. This is the oldest remaining blue law still left on the books in MD. What has shocked me here is that while a lot of hunters want the law changed, not many are willing to jump on the wagon and fight for their cause. I tried to get the members of my local hunting club involved and they ignored the chance. They all want to hunt on Sunday, but have a wait and see attitude instead of being proactive in trying to change things.
Best of luck to you in VA.

We have it Dorchester Count MD and it's great... Really gives you an opportunity to hunt hard for extra days and not have to use Vacation time at work... I love it!!!! I just wiosh that it would open up in Howard County, even if it's private property only. If I own it I should be able to hunt it I shhould be able to hunt it whatever day of the week I want!!!!!

Interesting that you have it in your county when state law bans it...except in select counties, on private property and only on a couple of Sundays per year. I did not think it was something that the counties could approve. Maybe I'm reading the law wrong or misunderstanding it.
