Clearcuts here are the thing of the past and I am glad of it. The
clear cuts took away the wintering grounds causing a sharp decline in the deer population. So I guess clearcuts are good if you do not have the harsh winters we have been known to have. The moose on the other hand thrived in the clearcuts after about 2 years. In this area the moose out number the deer. It would appear as though the clearcuts were part of a bigger picture to bring in money from the moose hunting, as they did no good for the deer here. Now when we go hunting most of the big trees are beside the tar roads. Not much protection for the deer. They hang around the roads and get run over. The clearcutting here has been proven to be a sad thing and hope you folks have better luck with them there. |

the winters aren't Mainlike here. They'e been very mild in the last few years anyway. There is plenty of other structures for them to winter in. The deer numbers in my area are deffinatly up!! they are just so tough to hunt now......at least without being able to scout........

ORIGINAL: dgraham4 Too many people are misinformed about clear cutting, Clearcutting is a valuable silvicultural practice that i think is not utilized enough. It upsets me how everyone is always preaching select cutting. Define select cutting, because 90% of the time people's definition of selecte cutting is a diameter limit harvest which does 100% more damage to a forest ecosystem than does a clear cut. As far as it hurting your hunting it may for a little bit , but it should turn it into a deer paradise. Also i wouldn't advise vandalising any equipment those loggers need to make a living too. |
RE: woooo is me, they're loggin our place.....again
Cuttings are awesome magnets for deer. We cut and hunt the same day after the crew is there. There are travel corridors that exist. Deer use left over tree lines, a row of brush piles, etc. Active logging does not drive deer away. Quite the opposite in fact. Good luck!

The sound of logging is a deer's dinner bell , and as much as I hate leasing I have to admit that $125 per year is the cheapest lease I've ever heard of . The going rate around here is more like $4-10 per acre per year , pray they don't raise yours .

I'm not leasing...just joinging the club. WESVACO leases for around 10 an acre i think.
