How High will YOU Go?

I just posted a question about deer movement in high winds, but what about you guys? Do any of you hunt on real windy days and if so how high in the tree do you get? I've hunted on days with winds 25-30 mph but don't climb as high as I normally would, say around the 15' range and try to find a tree that is reeaall sturdy!

I HUNT FROM 20' TO 30', NO MATTER IF THERE IS WIND OR NOT. MY SCENT STAYS HIGHER IN THE WIND CURRENTS, I CAN SEE FURTHER, AND ANYTYPE OF MOVEMENT I DO HAS LESS CHANCE OF BEING PICKED UP BY THE DEER.

During early bow season I normally go 10 to 15 feet and about the wind I have seen Big Bucks get confused with the wind blowing and make a mistake like walk right into my step dad.

I like to get 20ft up. No farther. On really windy days, about 15ft does it for me.

In high winds I worry about being stable enough to make a good shot. I have been swaying around before and don't think it makes for a good situation to be shooting when moving.

Wind or no wind, I'm not a big fan of heights. I usually try to get about 15' high. Most of the areas I hunt I wouldn't be able to see or shoot if I got much higher anyway so there wouldn't be much point, especially since I'd probably be too scared to shoot.<img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>

I've read that the higher your stand is the better the chance is that you will get only a single lung hit. I feel I owe it to the animal to eiter get a double lung or a heart shot, so I prefer to stay lower in the tree, even if my success suffers. Just my thoughts.

RE: How High will YOU Go?

I always find it funny when I see a stand so far up a tree that even the birds can't make it that high. When you set your stand so high in a tree you are eliminating the chances of making a double lung hit. All bowhunters know when you stick a deer through both lungs they very seldom run out of sight. When you stick a stand up in the nose bleed altitude you create such a steep angle that many times you have to shoot the deer in the loin to hit one lung. Going up high may be good for rifle hunters, but I see no really benefits from a bowhunting stand point. I understand that you can sometimes avoid deer at close distances from picking up your scent but it is easier to move to a new location where your deer are coming from the upwind side. Placing your stand up high in the tree is doing nothing but creating a bad shot angle and putting you in danger if for some reason you fall out.

BowHunterCop - I sure as hell hope you hunt with a rifle! From your stands it is 20-30 feet STRAIGHT down. Now if you hunt with a bow, thats going to be putting your shots out at those longer shots nobody likes. Youre stand doesnt need to be that high up. The deer cant smell above thier heads really. Sure they may, but if youre 5' above the heads of the deer, they wont smell you. Besides, you shouldnt HAVE a smell.

10 - 15 feet for me! If your 30 ft up a tree you might be able to get away with some movement with deer that are close to you (20yds - under) , but your gonna get busted quicker by deer that are out there a ways. They'll see you moving before you even see them.

I preferably like to still hunt myself. If I do go into a stand I like to be about 10-15 feet in the air. If you use sent block or somthing in that nature it shouldn't really matter

20 ft min to 30ft max. Usually on or under 25 ft.
I usually place my stand 20 yards from where I expect the closest deer
to appear so my shot angle isnt to sharp.
On very windy days I usually ground hunt.

I go between 20-30 ft. depending on terrain and cover. The wind is not a factor on how high I go.

I'm usually around 17-18 feet no matter what the weather. HOWEVER, this morning it was VERY WINDY and I was in a climber I haven't used much in a new part of the farm. In the dark, by accident, I wound up around 25 feet up. By 11:00am, I couldn't take the wind any more and got down!

Today's small bucks are tomorrow's trophies.

WOW, we don't have many trees over 10' tall, dang sure won't find any that are 20' tall. We have several 8' tripods that we stick into cedar trees to hunt off of. I wouldn't know what to do if I was 20-30 feet up. Do you guys wear parachutes or bungee cords???

How do you clear shooting lanes if your 30' up?

I hunt 10 to 15 feet. In western SD 20 mph winds are the norm, anything below 15 mph we call calm. I always put my stands on the biggest tree possible to minimize rocking all over the place. IMHO, when the wind is up around 20, scent is not that big a deal, it is blowing all over the place so I don't think it benefits you to get higher. The deer are less likely to notice movement in the wind also as everything in the woods is shaking all over the place. I'm not a big fan of heights so 15 is as far as i'll go and I don't have trouble with scent or with movement.

Depends on what way the wind is blowing..if its blowing in the right direction...then i might go out and i'll sit in the woods down in a gully type spot where the wind wont bother me hardly at all.

Around 25' for me. No problem with the angle. A deer has almost the same amount of area to hit from above as broadside. You can still get a double lung and the angle provides for a good blood trail from the exit hole. It also helps alot with the scent issue. Who ever said you should be &quot;scent free anyway&quot; is gullible if you think you can be totally scent free. There is no such thing.

For years I hunted from 12' to 15' and would get BUSTED fairly often. Now I'm trying 18' to 22' and am really liking it. I've been out about 12 times and haven't Busted yet! I'm also seeing more deer than I ever have before. (probably triple) I've had over 20 shot opportunities.

I really like going higher!

Good Luck!

PRACTICE....PRACTICE....PRACTICE......SUCCESS!

Sorry to say this, but if you hunters are getting busted at 15 ft and up, you are doing someting wrong?? I only neeed to stay from 5-10 ft and never been busted by a deer yet. I dont understand how some people are so restless and can't seem to stay still in their trees, not even form 30 minutes (hate it when someone else like this is hunting a few hundreds yards from me).

The way I see it, anyone that's not patient enough should not be bowhunting period....

RE: How High will YOU Go?

Just like in SD, here in Iowa 15 to 20 MPH is the norm and I don't have many trees big enough for a stand. So I do 90% of my hunting from the ground. I do have 1 permanant stand built in a tree, about 20 feet up. But it's uphill in front of my stand so much though that a deer at 40 yards is almost eye level. I won't go in the stand if it's real windy like yesterday. That costs me a shot at a real nice 8 point but I would rather have him scent me at 60 yards then fall out of a tree. Guess I'm a chicken.
