Pin settings

No right or wrong here, just curious. Where does everybody have their pins set at? I havea 3-pin sight set at 20-30-40

RE: Pin settings

I have but 1 pin. I have setting for yardages out to 60, increments of 10. For hunting purposes, I leave it set @ 25 yards. 1" high at 20, 1" low at 30.

I'm sure I could gap shoot 10 yard spaces, but why bother when I have the pins. It's easy enough. Works for me.

The 50 and 60 yard pins are just for practice (I sometimes practice at 70 yards). During the hunting season, those pins are just for decoration.;)

It's a 62 yd shot from the corner of my back patio to the lg mcKenzie - by our grapevines.

I practice a lot from 50 and 60 yds......but I'd never take a shot at a deer from that distance.

60 is for practice. Sure makes a 25 yard shot look awfully close especially if you use a 3D target for practice, which is the whole point. Plus it is a lot of fun to shoot that far I think, and it makes you shoot properly or it is all over the place.

RE: Pin settings

I have 5 pin's and I set them for 20,30,40,50,and 60yrds. I don't do a whole lot of shooting at 60yrds ,but I do up to 50.

RE: Pin settings

I am with the idea Huntingson brings to this. I practise at 40 and 50 and it makes those 25 and 30 yard shots so much bigger. Now if you're hunting out west on Wyoming or Colorado or similar I'm told a 30 to 40 yard shot might be practical but in Ohio a 25 yard shot is the norm.

You know I saw the title and knew that the temptation to criticize shot distances would be too great. Happens EVERY time pin settings and shot distances are brought up. [&:]

My distances are 20, 30, and 40. But I am limiting myself to 30 since I cannot group well enough at 40 yet. :)

my last two pins have red fibers - If I have to use those pins, I know to stop - its too far.

NOW THATS FUNNY!!!!!

Mine are at 20,30 other 2 are for decoration or if others get damaged.

RE: Pin settings

I'm not sure where I read it........but.....

Someone was touting that +/- 75% of one's practice should be done at 2X the distance you intend to shoot (in the field). That's the ONLY reason my sight has 5 pins!...lol

I do know that I shoot to just over 60 yds practicing.....but the majority is from 40 and 50. When we get tot the 20 and 25 yd shots......they seem REALLY close.

I know they're close together but I've found it more beneficial for 3-D to have them that close.
I've never taken a shot over 30 at a deer though.
Challynger, great thread by the way!

1 pin and have adjustments for 20/30/40/50 and for hunting i leave it at 25 yard mark.. Walt

RE: Pin settings

One pin ajustable sight. So I am good from 10-70 yards(though is is going to be set at 20 for hunting). Farthest shot I will take on a deer is 25-30 yards.

JoeRE 08-11-2006 03:03 PM

RE: Pin settings

I agree 100% with the 2x comment....in summer my pins are:
20
35
45
60
70
85
and thats all because it is the max distance I can shoot at (and it pretty much bottoms out my sight)...in hunting season i just have the first three on... less to look at, snag on brush etc. 40 yard shots are much easier to hit when you shoot a few practice arrows twice as far

also, when i started shooting at long range it literally halved my group size at 40 yards in a matter of weeks

JoeRE 08-11-2006 03:10 PM

RE: Pin settings

ops i just realised some might think i hunt at 85 yards...not SO i meant practice, depending on conditions i wont shoot a deer farther than 30-50 yards
