Anything you don't like about your Summit??????

I'm using a Python and I get some noise out of the cable. I've been up about a dozen trees so far with it and it has what I would consider normal wear. When I carry it or climb with it the cable slaps the inside of the stand and makes a lot of noise.

I bought this stand because I wanted a quiet, comfortable stand. It is pretty comfy. Anyone else notice this problem? Should I let Summit know?

Thanks guys!

Chief,

I'm assuming you're talking about the cables used to wrap around the tree, the 8,000-lb. test steel ones...

I'm not sure how they could hit the inside of your stand, but do you insert them all the way to the last stop when you're packing in and out? This makes for a tighter bend for what's left, and places more tension on the cables so they can't move.

Let me know if that helps, or you're talking about something else.

RE: Anything you don't like about your Summit??????

Yes. Those are the ones. I know what you are saying about the tension and that does help some but doesn't stop it from slapping. I have been securing them with a strap while I'm packing in and out but I really shouldn't have to. That doesn't help any while climbing the tree though.

Thanks for the thoughts MQ1, and good luck out there!

Stop at the hardware store and get a can of that spray on plastic coating, works great for coating the cables, and lasts a lot longer than the stufff that's on there when you buy it.
I spray it down in those tubes too, it gets rid of that noise. I also spray it where the cable stop hits the bracket to keep it tight, where you slide the clip over it. Get it all down on the inside of there, it'll be real quiet, and absolutely no metat to metal.
It's the stuff used to color coat tool handles, or protect from rust. You can get green or black.

Great idea! So I guess you noticed this too. How long does it take to cure and do you know what the stuff is called?

Man, that's a good idea! Thanks 6ptsika!

Good hunting!

I have a Cobra I've used for 4 seasons and I really like it very much. I'll pay more attention to noise while I'm packing, but in the tree it's perfectly quiet.

The only thing I don't like about my Summit is that I cannot seem to stay awake while on stand. I have noticed the noise also, and I have found that if I push the cables far into the shaft, with no more than one notch showing on each side, that this just about eliminates the noise. I also replace the shrink tubing every year or two. Hopes this helps.

ChiefHeadHunter,

I bought the Cobra XLS used this year and found that the cables were pretty well worn off. So I bought two new shrink wrap tubes for $14.99 through their website.

Hope this helps...

I've been hearin that slappin noise when packin in-out also.
all the time i thought it was the 2 sections clankin together.
guess it was the cable. think I'll try that plastic spray stuff.
but does that stuff smell? what about spraying the cables with
that black under-coating stuff that comes in a spray can?

The only thing I don't like about mine is that I could only afford one!

Royal Rack-

I just got this one new and have climbed less that 20 times and I go about 240 (including gear)not that it should matter. I don't think I should be having this problem yet if at all.

Bogobble-

I think I'll be looking for some of this so if you get some of it, coat a tool or something and let me know how long it takes to fully cure. I'll do the same if I can find some.

Good one Josh!

Im 6'6" and 235 without gear, so I dont think your weight is making the noise. If I dont have my cables in the bar as far as possible, mine becomes cumbersome and does make noise..But only when I smack limbs, trees, and my feet. And when your hustleing through the woods trying to get in position before daylight, make sure that when you bend under a branch, that the stand clears it too. Otherwise, your laying on your back wondering what happened and where you are.

Summit beats API in every feature but two: it bites in trees TOO much, and you sometimes have to fight to get the platform out, and it doesn't go around as big a tree as API will accomodate. I like getting in big trees if I can to break up my silhouette. API gives me that option, while Summit won't fit as big a tree...

I don't think you can go wron with either stand.
The stuff is called Plasi Dip or Plasi Dip Spray.
I used the spray, seemed like it would be easier than dipping the cable a little at a time. Probably other brand names out there too.

Making a great stand even better. I am going to give it a try.

I have also put a rope with a clip on it to connect the top and bottom. That way it does not have to be tied and I can take the top part of the climber off while standing on the platform near the ground and then put it on the ground while I take off the platform to stack them together.

I like that idea too schlich92. I might try to reposition mine too. I don't really like it between my feet because it tends to get in the way.

In all seriousness, take a 6' long rope and tie one end to the seat, and one to the platform. If the bottom happens to slip while your climber and slips off your feet, the rope will catch it and u can pull it back up to your feet instead of shimmying down the tree. Its never happened to my summit, but has to my hunters view, and once was enough to know that I dont want to take the chance.

Chief,

I actually spoke to tech services at Summit about this problem, and they recommended the following:

1) take the green strap and run it vertically, instead of horizontally, around the two platforms

2) cram those cables into the tubes as far as they will go

Since then, I haven't had any noise during transport. However, I bought mine new at the end of September, and the coating on my cables is also starting to get beat up pretty bad. Probably climbed 25 times or so...

6ptsika: Thanks for that plastic dip idea, sounds like a plan.

I was making noise too, but then I reallized that it was the metal hook on my 4-point saftey harness. I would just check that it is not that. It is simple, but might not be the problem.

RE: Anything you don't like about your Summit??????

I have the Summit Cobra and have used my brothers Summit Viper. I haven't experienced noise while packing either stand in/out.

BE SURE TO:

Push the cables AS FAR into the holes as possible.

When placing the seat section on the floor section, place the cleats in the shoe straps and cinch tight.

Strap the two together Vertically with the long green strap

Buy or go to your local snowmobile dealer and ask for a few straps that are used in packaging the machines in the crates. They are the same straps you got with your stand,(PERFECT)(FREE) And work well for other stuff.

With that extra strap rap it around the two pieces horizontally.

That makes it sound! no pun intended.

.....Things I Would Change.....

The backpack straps aren't positioned well and the stand rides low on the back. This makes the stand feel heavier than it is.

Speaking of heavy...I wish they made a super light stand for us hunters pushing 165 lbs

6ptsika - I love the rubber spray idea and that would cure the noise of inserting those cables during setup for sure. Good thinking!

All in all I love these stands and would buy another if I had to.
