Moving to North Carolina

Hey all, its been a bit since I last posted but wanted to throw this out there. I am moving to North Carolina next year and will be living in Union County (close to the SC border). I have a few hunting related questions I'd like to throw out there.

Anyone on here hunt near this area?

How do you like the bow hunting?

Is there going to be a change to the "no hunting on Sundays" law anytime soon?

Can you recommend any good hunting clubs for me to look at?

I know deer size is smaller than here in Long Island NY, but is there any other comments or feedback you can throw my way?

Thanks in advance,

Flip

I lived in Northern NC in Roxboro years ago. It was all hunt clubs and dogs, with shotguns no one was bowhunting (at that period of time) And all big areas of land were leased by the clubs. Good luck i'm sure it's changed somewhat.

Stay the heck out of NC. You can visit but don't be a Damm Yankee and stay. If youdo you need to move to one of two places,
Cary - Containment Area for Relocated Yankees or
Clayton - Cary Like Area Yankees Taking Over Now

Seriously,It's way slower pace down here. I don't belong to any hunt clubs but have made a lot of friends since moving here. There are a lot of properties all over the place that if you meet the right people you can gain access. Social events like church, kids sports and town events are key. It does take awhile to break into the local crowd but they are great folks once you do.

Good luck!

Flip...The best bowhunting closest to you (in my opinion) will be at the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge...Its in Anson and Richmond Counties...The main office is on Hwy 52 between Ansonville and Wadesboro...You have to go by there and get a permit to bow hunt, and have to keep it on you at all times..
There are some nice bucks on this refuge...Bow hunting usually runs from mid-September to mid-October...After that it is firearms only/draw hunts...
They have a good population of deer...This should get you going until you can find some private land or a club...Good Luck

;)

I'ver already committed to the Union County area. I do have a Damn Yankee friend in Cary though. How long have you lived in NC? Where did you move from and what part are you living in now?

I actually went to school in Greensboro NC so I am familiar with the pace and people.

Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it.

I'm in the Raleigh area. I actually was offered a farm to lease cheap about 2 years ago by my UPS Driver. He turkey hunts the farm but knew I deer hunted. Like I said, hunting oportunities are all over the place when you socialize.

Good luck!

I was born in NC......graduated from high school, here......moved away to go to college/start a life......and moved back here in 2000. I live near Winston-Salem, and the bowhunting opportunities up here are abundant. I've got 4 tracts of land.....ranging from 24 acres (which happens to be my honey hole) to over 200 acres.

I graduated from college in Union County.....and lived there for a couple of years (2 different times). There are ABUNDANT opportunities to deer hunt, there. There are still a LOT of farmers, there.....and there's a LOT of people that own HUGE tracts of land.

Get down there......and look for an archery club. I havea friend I do business with who lives there....and he bowhunts....but only for Elk....and NOT in NC....lol. He may know of a good club. Shoot me an e-mail sometime. Let me ask him how the deer hunting is in that area. I see PLENTY of bucks in the NC Sportsman magazines taken from that area, every year.

I was right down the road at Guilford College during the same time as you. I came back home at finished up school here in NY (I had a little too much fun down there if you know what I mean)

Cool deal.

Sounds like you got a lot of questions answered. I haved lived in NC for ever. And hunt thefoothills mostly, but also around Wake and Chatham Co.

As far hunting Sundays I beleive that will be changed next year.....again "I beleive"
The insurancecompanies are pushing hard for it.
