finding it hard to go out to practice

Is anyone finding it hard to go outside to practice with this heat? I am. Heat index was over 108 and tomorrow is supposed to be worse. Sux cause I've really got the itch. Sooner or later I'm probably just going to go get heat stroke.:)

Yep. In fact, I just don't do it. Call me baby if ya want, but it's darn hot out there!!!!

There are benefits to working at a pro shop though.......I don't have to pay to shoot. Nice and cool in there! ;):D

I don't feel too bad about it. I have been shooting better this year than I have yet. But I have not shot in about a week or two. It has just been to darn hot round here.

I try to go out right at dusk when things are cooler and practice in low light conditions can't hurt. I try to shoot every day.

yea either 1st thing in the am, or right before dark. Plus you can try taking only 2-3 shots. Helps you focus on that 1st shot which is what matters when afield.

93 deg and 60%+/- humidity (up to 70% just after the rain).
It was beutiful today!
Can't wait till tomorrow. 97 deg for a high. I don't work till 11pm so I'll be out back shooting the bow in the afternoon after I get home from putting up trail cams at our cabin.

I love this weather.

Serriously, I do.

I hear ya, with the heat the way it is no one in there right mind ( or is it left ) wouldn't be out unless they had to.
I'm with txrookie and rybo if your gonna practice, get it done real early or wait until the temp gets cooler.
On the weekends I'll be the first one at the 3D range, sometimes right when they open up for the day.
But on the week day I'll wait for the sun to start setting.

In Texas this is the norm. We use to it.

I think the addiction has over ridden the heat. We have been out practicing 3 or 4 times a week. Yesterday, we went to the rod and gun club and walked through their course. It was hot, but we had a good time.

I hear ya with the heat but it also helps condition the mind along with the body. You guys preach about patience and control when afield so I look at it as just another way to better myself as a archer and hunter. Moving through the 3D course with sweat pouring off me as I negotiate my shots only makes me more confortable and confident when the moment of truth comes. Plus you burn more calories and can dehydrate faster in cold weathertrying to stay warm. Fact is it kinda crazy to go out and bare this heat but I take the positive and look at it as a opportunity to get better. JMHO

Only to see why I haven't moved to someplace with decent weather.

Like Texas, or New Mexico, or Arizona.

Someone made a good point about it being a mental thing. I guess I'll force myself to go out back tomorrow night. NOw the only thing to worry about is the skeeters!!!! They really stink where I'm at.[&:]

Tell me about it. Skeeters are the only thing I dread about this weather.
I don't know how many foggers I've used this summer. A few bottles of deet and my Thermacel has gotten a good workout also.
(that's in addition to the spraying done by the township here)

Actually, Tx has some of the lowest Cost-of-Living in the nation.... as long as you dont want ag land in the hill country...

I shoot at the shop, and in my apartment. I get 16-17 yards in the apartment which is plenty for practice on a 3 spot target.

DANG HOT!!!

I finally said the heck with it, and joined the St. Louis Bowhunters club this weekend. I'll just shoot at the indoor range in St. Charles until it gets cool enough outside to go back to the outdoor ranges.

I just shoot form in the basement when it is extreme (cold, hot, raining, snowing) outdoors. My form tends to go off if I don't shoot pretty much everyday. One or two days off is OK, but I dont take off that regularly. Anything over that, and I'm spending about two weeks getting back into the groove.

I agree.... I've tried to go out after dinner, and shoot my bow, but it's still like walking into a furnace! I can get one or two arrows shot, then I end up drenched in sweat. What's next? my bow start warping in the heat?!?! [&:]

I went out tonight and shot about 20 arrows. It was tough but I was glad I did. I'll be doing it more regularly. Besides I like to reward myself with a popsicle when I come inside.:)

YUP, too dang hot. It's going to cool off in a couple days here(back into the 80s) and we should beable to get out. A few missed days won't hurt you. You still have several weeks to practice.

JLmoore1956 08-01-2006 08:40 PM

RE: finding it hard to go out to practice

I know it is all relative, but after 120 or hotter, 105 sounds refreshing. Given that it is suppose to be in the 80s when we arrive next weekend, I am taking a sweater.........

Honestly, I know 105 seems hot and makes it rough to get out, but nothing is gonna stop me from being outside practicing when I get back 105 temps, rain or snow...... I want to see green, see houses, and American people, and feel the bow in my hand, to hear the arrow hit the target, to just be back in the USA! [8D]:D
