broadheads
Ok, this may sound retarded, but do mechanical broadheads go all the way through a deer? i have been told they dont, and its better to shoot them for turkeys, and so i am gonna try it this spring...but this last year was my first bowhunting, and i shot a doe with a mechanical broadhead at 3 yds, and it didnt go all the way through, was it just my old bow? or what? thanks

RE: broadheads
Sometimes they do sometimes they dont.

RE: broadheads
depends on the k-energy.
I have shot five deer with mech.and got four complete pass throughs. as said it has a lot of factors to consider. I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry. |
RE: broadheads
Ke is only 1 factor and speed is another with the larger cut heads, they require more speed to open completely before completely inside the animal.Go a few pages further and see one of the other posts on the subject,It gets a little deeper.

RE: broadheads
At three yards, unless you hit that doe in the shoulder, it should have completely penetrated and exited the other side. I've watched as a 35# recurve shooting wood arrows and glue on 2 blade broadheads that are properly tuned to each other, completely penetrate and exit the other side on a large doe.
Also, at three yards, if the bow isn't properly tuned or the arrow isn't spined correctly, the arrow could have hit the deer sideways which will severely limit penetration. Shot placement is still a critical factor as is kenetic energy. To my understanding, it takes quite a bit of kenetic energy for the mechanicals to operate properly, so if you are shooting an older bow with a lower draw weight you may not have enough for them to work as they should. Plus, some of them mech heads are pure junk, breaking up as they enter the deer. Sometimes they will catch a rib on their way in and follow that rib without exiting the animal or even getting to the vitals. Did you kill and recover the doe? If so, when you cut her open, what did you find? |
RE: broadheads
Fixed verses mechanical on page 4 will give you some more info. Wahya is correct some are pure junk and some penetrate better than a fixed head. |
RE: broadheads
arrow weight, arrow speed, cutting diameter of the head, blade angles, the type of opening system( rubber bands, O rings, clips etc), and bow tune have more to do with how well a head will penitrate. Mechanicals are not a quick fix by any means. I have found that to get the most out of them it takes more research, and just as much bow tuning time as a good fixed blade heads. mechanicals don't penitrate less becuase they are mechanicals, but rather becuase of the factors listed above. A fixed blade head with the same cutting diameter, blade angle, shot from the same bow should penitrate just about the same amount as a mechanical made the same way. In that case the blade retention system is the only differnt factor. For the most part smaller mechanicals should be shot out of well tuned bows generating at least 55 ft/lbs of KE. I don't know why you didn't get full penitration but take a hard look at you bow tune, and Kinetic energy levels , as well as how big you mechanical head was, and how steep the blade angle is.
TAKE YOUR KIDS HUNTING AND YOU WON'T BE HUNTING FOR YOUR KIDS |
RE: broadheads
I agree with the factor of the size cutting diameter and how fast your bow shoots. I myself prefer fixed broadheads.

RE: broadheads
It depends on a lot of things..... but..... I've seen some impressive results this year. I don't use them and in fact have been one of the guys always speaking out against them. My hunting buddy has shot 7 or 8 deer this year with Rocket Mini Blasters I think it is. All have passed through at ranges out to 38 yards. He shot one Friday with the deer at an angle towards. He slammed it through the top part of the shoulder, thru a lung, the liver and out a few inches in front of the hind leg nearly field dressing the deer in the process. The arrow went all the way through with the deer only making it about 40 yards. Devistating!!!!! He's had others just like it this year. He's pushing about 80 footpounds of KE. Saturday morning I put an arrow with a Rocket attached on my rest. I've shot them at targets and they are accurate.
