Would like your feedback.

This is probably the wrong place to post this so i'll apologize in advance. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with doing charity hunts. I would like to get involved with taking kids, who are ill or in any way going through a hard time in life, deer hunting. I would even be open to doing handicapped hunts. I feel there is a need for this kind of program. My wife works at a children's hospital and I can't help but think there might be some kid that would love nothing more than a day in the woods. Even with the war in Iraq there has to be either, children who have lost their fathers or, soldiers that have been injured that would love a chance to go hunting. Bow hunting for deer is something I truly love and god willing I will be able to do it for the rest of my life. I would love nothing more than to be able to set aside a few weekends to share my love of deer hunting. Unfortunately I have no idea where to start. I have a couple farms that I hunt that would be open to the idea of what I would like to do. I also have to think if I talk to others they would be open to the idea too. So I don't think finding places to hunt would be terribly difficult. If anyone has any experience in this kind of thing I would really appreciate your feedback. I thank god everyday for my health, my wife, and the love he has given me for the great outdoors. I think doing something like this is the very least I could do in return. Sorry so long, but thanks for reading. Also I guess I should add I live in Ohio so crossbows are legal so that will help with the bowhunting.

I am a "guide" in two Wheelin' Sportsmen deer hunts, one put on by my local NWTF chapter and the other by the local Whitetails Unlimited chapter. Both hunts are conducted in SE Ohio with one held in late October and the other in mid-November. Our hunters are allowed to use any legal firearm for deer in Ohio (most use shotguns). I have helped out for three hunts and the hunters are very appreciative for all the work we do to help them get a deer. Most don't even care if they shoot one or even see one! Just spending 3 days out in the woods and talking about anything and everything is enough for most. If this sounds like something you'd like to come down and try or even try to get started in your area send me a PM and I'll try to get you the info. PS I know this is in the archery section and we use firearms but it is still one of the best times hunting I've ever had and wouldn't miss the hunts for anything!

I am not sure if I can help but I can tell you what I did. It actully started by donating my time and yellow lab to a local pheasant farm. They had kids from around the county, that had just passed hunter safety, and also had nobody to take them hunting. I did this for a couple years and then for one reason or anotherthe game farmed stopped doing it. A few years went by and I had purchased 300 acres and 170 acres for hunting. Both areas had to many doe. I wasthinking that it wouldbe a good oppertunity toget some kids out there and also take some doe out.I contacted my local DNRto see if they could guide me in the right direction. The gave me a list of hunter safety classes in the area along with who was teaching them. I talked to the teachers and theylet me to introduce myself to the class. It was the first night and all the parents were there. I explain to them what I was trying to do and I got 8 kids out of 4 classes in the area. In Wisconsin we had a T zone hunt (doe only with a rifle) in mid october. It is a four day hunt and I got volenteers from work to helpme out. Myself and the rest of the guys would take 1 or 2 kids out to the stands and let them hunt. We have only been doing it for two years now but I really hope to continue to do so. Boy I feel like I rambled without giving you any usefull info. If you have questions I will certainly answer them as you post.

That sounds like a great program. Thanks for the info. In Ohio especially where I hunt there are a ton of does and farmers are always getting kill permits to thin the herd. Might be a good direction to start.

Good deal wonder boy. If you contacted any of the organizations that dealt with the people you want to help they maybe able to point you in the right direction.

Be prepared for heart ache and lose. My inlaws were involved with a lot of kids who were having hard times for one reason or another. Many things of value were lost during that period. their marriage suffered as well. Some of those kids know how to play one against the other. Then there are the kids who really need more but you can't give it, makes you feel like crap.
