Broadheads or Fieldtips?

When practicing with a bow do you guys use fieldtips or broadheads? I have heard that you are suppose to use the broadheads because then you're using the same arrow that you would be using when a big buck comes. I have been using fieldtips the last few years. Should i switch?

Before ANYONE goes into the woods with the intent on flinging an arrow at an animal......he should practice and be proficient with the EXACT weaponry he'll be utilizing.

That means.....practice with the broadheads/expandables before you go to the woods. MANY broadheads don't fly the same as one's field points (for a MYRIAD of reasons).

I begin my final tune up around July 1st and shoot the broadheads I am wanting to use for the upcoming season. After I get really comfortable on the performance, I'll back off and mix it up, just to save money. It's very important that you know how the real deal will perform in the field. You really can't practice enough with the broadheads in my opinion.

I agree with SBG. You need to have practiced with the setup that you will be hunting with.
I think it is fine to practice throughout the off season with field tips (its cheaper from both the broadhead and target standpoint) but you eventually need to know where your broadheads will be hitting and site them in

I'll start shooting broadheads exclusively within about 30 days of the opening. Most of the time though, field tips, broadheads, judo's, steel blunts, and rubber bluntsall pretty much fly the same from my longbow.

What about the guys who dont have a place to shoot at home. Most ranges don't allow broadheads.

I do agree that you HAVE to be 100% sure of your equipment and know how that BH is going to fly... I just dont know where to go to practice.

I never shot broadheads before the season begins. I guess it would be a really good idea. I don't have a foam target that can take broadheads so i guess ill get one. Doesn't it dull the broadheads tho?

I bought a bunch of muzzy 4 blade broadheads after the season at wally world for $5 a package. I use some of them for practice, and keep others for hunting. I practice with both field points and broadheads when it gets closer to the season, but just field points until then. Out of my set-up, field points and muzzys fly just about the same. My club has a broadhead range with an elevated platform. We have targets out at 20 and 30 yards, and we put out additional targets at about 10 yards and 25. In a couple of weeks, its gonna be time to break out the broadheads.

I have a braodhead tipped arrow that I keep in my quiver all the time. Each time I shoot,I take one or two shots with it into my broadhead target.

I tune my bow to shoot whatever I will be using to hunt with and take note of how it shoots. I do not practice exclusively with my hunting arrows. I set aside my best arrows and tune them with hunting tips then don't touch them until I hunt with them. I practice with field tips, but I know what to expect out of my broad heads when I shoot them, there will be no suprises when I let the string go.

I shoot too much to be using a fixed blade all the time, especially when my field tips pretty much shoot the same. I like using a bag target, that doesn't last very long with broad heads;).
